Hello
On 15th august 1944 the US troops with some French ones too landed on the beaches of Cavalaire sur Mer. Since I am fortunate to spend about 10 weeks a year there and every 15 august since 15 years, I took some pics of the reenactment. I already apologize for those who aer used to Kerouac's pics, I am a lousy photographer, and on top of it I arrived late, which means I was not ideally positioned to take the pics. Nevertheless here they are.
And now I know I must choose a larger dimension when I import via postimage...
A 'marsouin' navy french guy with a red 'pompom'.
the Jeep - did you know the name comes from General Purpose (vehicle) ? GP...
The back of a jeep - reenactors want to have everything as was.
An Opel Blitz reused by FFI soldiers, the one on the truck holds a Sten machine gun, dropped by the thousands over France.
An Ambulance on a 6 wheeler.
A french vehicle I think...
A duck... for DUKW : Amphibious truck, quite handy with landings...

Time flies and pics disappear. so I wanted to add some but older ones are no longer. here a small Dodge. A m3 half-track. In the back is a quadruple .50 cal machine gun. Used as anti aircraft but deadly against humanity nfantey. The ubiquitous jeep. A Sherman looking brand new albeit 79 years old. A captured Dodge used by the Germans. An ambulance. An amphibious jeep. Cousin of the DUCK. THE GERMAN dodge is tracting a Nebelwerfer. kind of ancestor of the Himars. Launched 5 rockets.

Oh, this is great, Whatagain! Thanks for renewing the pictures. I think it's better to create an account (free) with postimages.org to keep from losing pictures in the future. You certainly know your military vehicles, which must add to your enjoyment of this kind of event. I know the photos are from 2017, but do you remember why the flags were at half mast? Perhaps it was to honor those lost on August 15, 1944?

Thanks for this, whatagain. I don’t recall seeing this thread before, so missed the first group of photos, unfortunately. During the original event my father was a radarman on a U.S. Navy destroyer that eventually docked in the Port of Toulon. He was seriously injured and some others on his ship were killed. It was an event he never wanted to discuss, and it took some later research on my part to figure out what happened to him during that period of time.

Funny you seem call what we call Jeeps, Dodges. Dodge made their famous original Power Wagon, which was a big deal in WWII of course.

The new photos are excellent, whatagain.
I find it facinating that Jeeps still exist in 2023, but I guess that it is an iconic brand that will never die, even though it is now owned by Stellantis (Peugeot-Citroën-Fiat).

On the rare occasions you see those old US army jeeps for sale, they call them Willys jeeps.

On those, I'm pretty sure they say "Willys" on the back. I don't think the word jeep appears on them. I have a tenuous memory of hearing that the word jeep is a popular nickname for the vehicles & comes from their official Army initials -- G for government + ? ?.

My daughters and wife have at times confused me when they refer to virtually every four wheel drive as a jeep. Like vacuum cleaners are Hoovers.
