At Last we found a movie that did not give you that feeling of sticking it out just to see the ending. It was captivating in every sense and having Helen Mirren and Jim Carter alongside Ian McKellen completed an assured two hours of excellent entertainment.

My next recommendation might not excite anyone who has never played chess or even watched a game, but it is a very interesting movie and does stray away from chess from time to time. I got the main feeling at the end that Americans don't just fall over and die - they fight like hell.

I long ago forgot how to play the basic bit of chess I learned, but was riveted to The Queen's Gambit.

I couldn't get into Queen's Gambit. Jeff is watching the latest series of Silent Witness. I'm half watching it.

Last night we tried to continue watching the third episode of "The Girl in The Window Across The Street" but after her 4th bottle of red wine, and sipping it still looking very sober, I said That's It - No more. Am I quitting to early?

Still trying to work out how to see the The Banshees of Inisherin without going to the cinema. It looks so good.
I watched " The Menu" via my nieces Disney Plus subscription last week. Weird , in fact very weird , but its a thumbs up from me overall.

I saw that at the cinema. Having the same actor play all of the different men was more than creepy.

I watched The Fabelmans a couple of nights ago. Either there is something wrong with me or many movie critics worship Steven Spielberg to the point past objectivity. This was two and a half hours of failing to be engaged and being far too conscious that I was watching a movie. One of the beauties of movies in terms of getting the audience to fall under their spells, is that as a medium film can seem so real compared to a stage play. And there is another major flaw with The Fabelmans -- the script. It appears that the very name Tony Kushner sets critics to burbling. The script was not precisely wooden, but much of what came out of the characters' mouths was speechifying -- perfectly phrased and neatly wound up, but eye-rollingly unbelievable. An example would be an emotional fight between adolescent brother and sister wherein the sister breaks off from shouting at her brother to deliver a ringing endorsement of their mother, all couched in how-wise-are-the-young psychologically astute phrases. Another strike against verisimilitude was the directing, which ultimately made the film look more like a dress rehearsal than something finished, as the actors never seemed to let completely go. In fairness, Gabriel LaBelle, who plays Sammy Fabelman/teenaged Steven Spielberg, manages to spit out the directorial bit & come across as a real human. Everyone else seems like an actor acting. As I said, it seems everyone else loves what Spielberg did in this film, so in the interest of fairness I leave you with this: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_fabelmans

Our local PBS station airs (usually old) films every Saturday night. Some are better than others. Most are worth watching. This one was really old. Both Kimbys remembered having seen it with our parents while kids. But not one detail of the movie stuck with us from those long-ago viewings aside from the title. An all-star cast of comedians made it interesting to watch. www.imdb.com/title/tt0057193/

This is a really well-acted film. Two thumbs up. THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD, a Norwegian film. www.imdb.com/title/tt10370710/And PBS this weekend aired Some Like it Hot, starring Marilyn Monroe with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon (who got the Best Actor Oscar) in drag. Filmed in black & white because the guys makeup made their faces look green. PS Marilyn had a really lovely voice.

Finally got around to seeing THE POWER OF THE DOG, set in Montana, but filmed in New Zealand. Beautiful scenery, good acting, and an interesting contrast with another production about Montana ranchers, the series YELLOWSTONE. With a bit of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN thrown in. www.imdb.com/title/tt10293406/

BELLE, an anime feast for the eyes that tries to be too many things (a remake of Beauty and the Beast among them) and only partially succeeds at some of them. Mr. Kimby’s comment: “I wanna know what the writers were on!” www.imdb.com/title/tt13651628/

The Kimbys watched a dog of a movie last week, thinking we were watching a film of the same title that got good reviews. BEAST starring Idris Elba is a mess of a movie with a crazed CG lion attacking Idris and his teenaged daughters at every opportunity. Disappointing movie. www.imdb.com/title/tt13223398/Meanwhile, the 2017 film we WANTED to watch still looks good, but our library doesn’t have it. www.imdb.com/title/tt5628302/

I, in spite of my massive viewing reputation, skipped Beast, so you've got one on me. On of my channels is showing Seven this afternoon and I felt compelled to watch. It is just as creepy as the first time, if not more so.

EMPIRE OF LIGHT takes place in an old art deco movie theater in England during a time of racial tensions. Olivia Colman gives a riveting performance as a fragile woman stuck in a world where her boss, played by Colin Firth, takes advantage of her, and a young black coworker she befriends and gets sweet on is not quite able to be her lover due to the conditions of their times. Set in the time period when Chariots of Fire and Being There were new releases. Good performances, good story, beautiful setting. www.imdb.com/title/tt14402146/

We watched a strange film called TITANE tonight. Has anyone else seen it? Kerouac said: Can you explain WHY it won this prestigious award? Very strange film. The lead role was well-acted, but nothing about the film made any sense to us. The car show with exotic dancers was interesting…
