Hark! the sweet bells of jingoism are heard across the land... Most of our specialties are sweet stuff, junk food and imports. If you are looking for truly great nosh there are restaurants that do magic things to local bush tucker, specially in Darwin. I've dined on camel, buffalo, 'roo, emu and crocodile there. Quick trip through the alphabet posted...Aeroplane jelly...I have packets in my pantry ATM. tip to survive...mix pkt jelly crystals with 200ml boiling water until dissolved. Add cold water to make one litre. Drink this slowly (half hour) Good way to treat heat stroke and replace lost fluids.

Chiko Roll. Oddly...never see a girl/woman eat one or buy for kids. Seems to be a "secret men's business" initiation.
Flat white coffee. The nation would not be able to function without it. NB Ozzies know their coffee..drove Starbucks out of the country
Golden Gaytime nice on a hot day. Company was planning to change the name to a non-suggestive one but the people wanted it to stay.Too many Dad jokes and 12 year old boys snickering to kill this tradition.

The Aussie burger. Chain burger franchises just have NO IDEA. They are like Ford Edsels to Rolls Royces.
Iced vovos...genteel, lady-like, tea in teapots not bags, special treat for kids when visiting Gran. Classy enough to take and share with at meetings.
Fairy bread...? junk food...? kid too sick to eat -try some F.B.. Just had tonsils out-F.B great reminder of childhood. I know a couple who served it at their wedding.

In S Oz we call them yiros. Fresh cut lamb and the pita and trimmings.
VIP guests arrived unexpectedly at the governor's home. Lady Lamington found some not- -so-fresh sponge and created her "Lamington Cakes" Why they are named for him I don't know, he couldn't even keep an appointment diary.
The meat pie is the meal that makes Ozzies all equal . South Australia gave to the world the "Pie floater". A product of the depression, it was a bowl of thick blue-pea soup with a meat pie upside down, floating, and the tomato sauce on top. Served from a few horse drawn carts it was cheap and filling. Post-Depression it was the place to go after the opera or ballet for a snack before bedtime

Who cares who invented the pavlova? It is almost compulsory to have one at every social gathering, and everyone comes back for second helpings.There is usually an excuse why they want more, "I missed out on the crunchy bit" "Doctor says I need more fruit" "That cream part is messy, I'll tidy it up".
Quandongs are fussy plants ...will only grow if planted with a companion plant so the roots entwine. They are nothing like a peach and are used mainly for making yuppy food. Google Maggie Beer to get her great recipes for bush foods and gracious living.
NO ONE would have said, "Throw another shrimp on the barbie" We have Prawns, not shrimp. Prawns, as in, "Don't come the raw prawn with me" [Don't try to tell me a lie, or fool me]

Years ago, Arnotts hit a bad financial problem which was affecting the Oz money markets.They announced they would concentrate on the Tim Tam biscuits [Oz Favorite] and trade themselves out of trouble.Sales went through the roof and the company prospered. It was referred to as the Tim Tam led recovery.
Tim Tams feature in the "Tim Tam Slam" an activity of skill and timing.You bite the diagonal 2 corners off the biscuit and suck your coffee through the biscuit like a straw. As it melts you have to pick the right second to pop the crumbling mess into the mouth or you finish with a handful of gooey pulp.

Weet Bix has become the generic term for breakfast cereal in many cases but loyalty to the original is strong, "Aussie kids are Weet Bix kids" jingle has given youngsters a battle cry and adult sporting heroes to identify with. An earlier promotion showed people in situations which needed strength etc and a kid's voice musing "I hope they've had their Weet Bix.
Finally Mr Cactus Mick, how on earth can you like that slimy, sweet concoction called Marmite? True, it was a pretty good effort to try and copy Vegemite but where are the hops, celery, onion and seasonings? Connoisseurs say Vegemite is slightly saltier and bitter than Marmite. I always had some in my restaurant in Bali where tourists could try it. The German men liked the hops smell but no one else liked it. I realised that many babies in Oz start tasting some on toast at about 9 months...it is an acquired taste. The other issue is it can't be slathered on like peanut butter. It only takes a scrape over the bread to flavour it.
The B Vitamins have been acknowledged internationally. Among other things, these help keep insects away as they dislike the smell of Vit B . I have heard that a thin layer of Vegemite on the ankles repels leeches.
Anyway, I hope this "report" adds to the OP of Kerouac's and entertains you all.

I used to serve Weetabix to my kids for breakfast, but they needed some jam or something because otherwise they were rather dry and tasteless and rapidly turn to mush in the milk. I didn't realize they are an Australian specialty.
I haven't heard of most of the other stuff and wouldn't eat Marmite if I were paid to do so.So if Vegemite is even saltier...

But Aussies only ate Marmite until the late ‘30’s. Vegemite was only invented because Oz couldn’t get Marmite after the First World War. Vegemite was the copy.

I enjoyed this so much!! Amusing,,entertaining and well, some just plain weird concoctions.
I've eaten alligator many times but never crocodile. How does it taste Questa. (alligator tastes a bit like chicken and if prepared properly as in an etouffe can be positively delicious).
I love some of the names.
Now, with regard to the hamburger,. How does one eat this as it is way too big at least for me, to be eaten like a regular hamburger. That thing could never fit in my mouth and/or would completely fall apart while trying.
I love the look and description of the flat white. I would enjoy that I believe and bravo to y'all for running out Starbucks.
I do have to agree with Kerouac about some deserving to be in that other thread of abominations.

Crocodiles come in salt water or fresh water species and this is like marine or river fish flavours to start with. I like the salties as the meat is similar in texture to a 'steaky' large fish with translucent flesh and is usually cut into fillets. I do it as a stir-fry, quick cook to keep it from getting tough. It loses its translucence as it cooks and becomes more 'like chicken' in texture but retains a flavour closer to large fresh caught fish. Now, with regard to the hamburger,. Hey, Casi, you know what big mouths Ozzies have!! It is almost impossible to eat our burgers daintily. I examine the structural integrity of the object, select the weak spots and eliminate them first. Sometimes it is possible to deconstruct the burger and deal individually with the component parts. A full frontal attack is not recommended. It often leads to food all over the face, calls of 'Where are the Wet Ones' and the dog running away with the burger.

Because I watched every episode of the Great Australian Bake Off (despite it's having the most obnoxious presenters on any show ever), I actually have a passing acquaintance with some of the items mentioned. Watch the show if you want to see skilled bakers struggle to turn out perfect Lamington cakes or pavlovas.
