Well...just finished figuring out a way of posting pics, but lost 2 lots of text in the process. Finally my friend fumbled through with a system that you can see above. My back door leads to a concreted yard 6m X 2.7m. Tin shed one end and water heater and air-con the other. Rated at about 95% on the ugly scale. A home built pergola covers most of the area I have filled it with a small jungle of mixed plants, mainly grown from cuttings that have come my way. Some of the better plants were swapped or given as gifts. Lots of succulents...so easy as I am not really a gardener. I don't know the names of the green things that grow here but the last few weeks there has been a family of possums eating my plants and a few days of temperatures over the 40sC and north winds so my garden is not happy. I scavenge neighbouring streets and rescued the trolley /workbench, the wicker shelves and other useful things. The shed and small fence I covered with the remains of 2 large bamboo blinds. The elephant is a container for putting mosquito coils or citronella candles into.

You have a lot of happy plants there. Happy possums too, unfortunately. How can you repel them?
I did wonder if elephant dung was the secret to your success with plants. Glad to have that explained.

Oh, I LOVE your garden, Questa! I particularly admire your use of the space available and the items you have incorporated to enhance and personalize that space. Lots of succulents -- always a good thing!
I hope you can figure out something to do about the possums. County agent?

A lovely space Questa. Almost all of your plants are mainstays here.
I'm curious as to which plant the opossum is munching on. We have a huge opossum population here and I've never known them to eat foliage but, they love, love citrus and figs.
(Some people have reported success with deterring opossums with a natural concoction of chopped up garlic, hot red peppers (the hotter the better) mixed with dish detergent and water and sprayed onto the plant at frequent intervals).

Possums here are different beasties to opossums. Yours have a mouthful of lethal teeth and look scary while here they are cuddly looking and cute. They are a protected species even though they cause havoc in almost the whole of suburbia. The local council will get rid of rats and other vermin but advice on possums is to make sure there are no roof access for them and basically put up with them. Licenced trappers may remove a nuisance and release it in bushland but they are territorial and the newcomer is usually killed by the alpha males. The flowers that got almost wiped out from my place were Vinca, Amaranthus, baby cos lettuce, crotons and others I don't know their names. Not nibbled but stripped to the soil. Most are regrowing now but are battling the 42C temperatures we are getting.
Meanwhile ...possums have gone. Neighbour had a dead one in the roof ($400 to remove) Maybe the heat has done the job for us.

Interesting info on "your" opossum and "ours". I guess I never thought there were other species.
They can appear "cute" but are a nuisance. Not to the extent yours are. Ours are also pretty brazen. I came home one evening to find one on a table on my outdoor breezeway. I tried to scare it away yelling "scat, scat" and clapping my hands. I then threw a shoe at it. I missed hitting it and the opossum remained on the table unfazed by me looking at me as if to say, "WTF is your problem lady?", Then, they have that mouth that makes them look like they are smiling.
Crotons don't sound very appetizing.
