Stephen W. Hawking, the Cambridge University physicist and best-selling author who roamed the cosmos from a wheelchair, pondering the nature of gravity and the origin of the universe and becoming an emblem of human determination and curiosity, died early Wednesday at his home in Cambridge.

I like to imagine his spirit not "resting in peace" but flying freely through all the stars and universes, finding answers to his questions... and more questions to discuss with Galileo, Newton, Einstein and the rest of the gang. He would be laughing at the beauty of the way everything fits together, and full of hope for the next great minds, still Earthbound, to carry on exploring Space and Time.
After a fettered life on this puny planet he is now free to dance the cosmos.

Most of the French headlines were along the lines of "Stephen Hawking finally free to roam the universe."

It is the obvious metaphor, isn't it? The image is too lovely to leave it in the hands of sub-editors. They have no imagination.
