That plane was never a bomber, it was a night fighter. I suppose the long range drop tanks which could be carried under the outer wings, could be replaced with bombs, but that never happened.
I had intended to visit the Minster but just didn't get inside. It was a weekend, the city was extremely busy, and the heat was very tiring, so I was being lazy.
There are old buildings galore to admire
and while Mick has his gate, I have to be satisfied with a mere Lane
To escape the heat and crowds I took the river trip, not wildly exciting because the city is so small so that most of the time one is almost in the countryside
Up river from where we set off some racing was going on, the crew on the left had just won their race
Along the way we passed this neat flotilla of ducks, father leading and mother bringing up the rear
York seemed to have plenty of Japanese tourists, so no surprise to see this one
a standard river trip, there is a park one side and the outer city the other here
A nice old steel bridge and we are out into the woods
This fellow must be the local hoarder
but the banks are well overgrown
Returning we get a glimpse of the grandstands of York Racecourse, where some plutocrats are having fancy flats added
We also see the little bridge where a tributary joins the main river
Leaving the boat passed this quirky little bar, named after a pop band
To visit another ancient monument, the old castle called Cliffords Tower
Outside was an exhibition of the "Good old Days" and a Shakespeare theatre.
here is a row of heads stuck on poles to represent the treatment of criminals, how we need proper punishments today! There are a tribe of bankers who richly deserved such treatment 10 years ago, but who have been let off scot free.
Here is a lesser offender, in the Stocks, where the populace at large were able to throw whatever they liked at her
And a pigeon loft, where birds were fattened for the table
And a band to keep the crowd entertained, although the music was a bit mournful
Look at the relief on the faces of these animals having successfully shoved their way through the wall
I had not realised that York Races was on at the time of my visit, which resulted in great crowds in the pubs on Saturday night, when I had problems finding dinner.
See this riverside pub
The people were very well dressed in the main and out for a good time, The ladies especially made the most of it, comic hats called 'fascinators' are all the rage
but some of them spell 'trouble'
See these bright, tight, lasses, dancing up the street
These fellows are most relieved at having escaped the mawther in the white dress
The setting sun nicely lit up the buildings along the river
Soon be bedtime, might rake up some more tomorrow
