I have to admit that those -- what should I call them? -- Dutch collars have always disturbed me. I can't imagine anybody wanting to wear such a thing.

I loved the flashmob with the militia tracking down the thief after the modern theft alarm went off. Also funny that it was sponsored by a bank.
The elaborate and impractical lace collars were a status symbol - uncomfortable ones still exist, we need only thing of ultra-expensive, towering stilettos , to say nothing of superfluous body modification à la the Kardishian clan.
But we also see the emergence of the far more subtle and low-key display of wealth among some of the Protestant merchant families shown. In particular in the Netherlands and England, which has become a sign of "old money". You can observe the modern version of such dress in the Old South district of Amsterdam. They are up in arms about the presence of gaudy Russians, some of them mobsters, moving in, with their flashy furs and fast cars.
