Great news, Casi. You can finally begin real planning instead of despairing.

Thanks good people. I was angsting for a stretch there. I tried to read the Geotechnical Investigation of the property that would be a fascinating read if I could understand what even a fourth of it meant. I laughed at one point because I kept thinking "this is something that Mark would understand and make for great bedtime reading".

I was already quite proud that my younger nephew is a successful immigration lawyer, but I just learned that he now owns his own law firm, has testified before U.S. congressional committees on the subject and is the co-author of a book called "Conducting Immigration Evaluations - A Practical Guide for Mental Health Professionals." I saw it is not one of the cheaper books offered by Amazon.
Unfortunately, we have learned in recent years that testifying before an American government congressional committee is about as useful as performing at a clown convention.

Great news, Casi! Let the building begin!
I’m wishing we could have a dedicated thread on here, with photos, but aren’t you the gal who doesn’t DO photos? Maybe Bixa could do a tutorial. At least a few images (before, post-Fire, during and after) would be great to see.
I like to have an image in my head if where my people live.
But maybe word-pictures will have to do.
Good luck, casi and T.

Just now saw this post was updated as well, fantastic news Casi! Onward!
We have a friend here awaiting approval of his plans as he does have to have piles done, it is going to cost him $150,000.00! If I am not mistaken, I think I heard them saying they have to go down 15 feet. He knew this would be necessary but not to this extent. The piles are also being installed for the pool as well.

mich, not sure if it is the same in some other countries but in the UK, piles are also the common word for haemorrhoids. It was quite a shock upon reading your first couple of sentences as to the cost of having them rectified. Then I read the rest of it.

“Piles” was used in Wisconsin, too.

So bad news good news. My implant (tooth) loosened up over several days and actually fell out on Monday! I had had an extraction a couple weeks ago of a cracked molar on the other side (for my next implant) so I couldn’t chew on EITHER side. I was chewing with my incisors like a rodent for a couple days till we got home from the cottage!
My dentist not only squeezed me into his busy schedule, he re-installed the implant crown for free, though it’s been 3 years since he initially installed it.
Implants are so expensive nowadays that it was a relief to owe nothing for this emergency appointment. And to not have broken the damn thing. (Or swallowed the tooth when it fell out!)
I’m leaving him a good review on Yelp!

Guess that's what's called for. The word I know for the columns that are sunk into the ground to support a building (& apparently a swimming pool) is "pilings".

Piles, pilings, piers, caissons.....variations of similar things as far as I know.. ...you say tomado (my daughter does and I invariably need to correct her).

I'm surprised that someone living where Mich does feels the need to put in a swimming pool, especially if the land it's on requires that much preparation and cost. If the guy is going to heat it, that's even more expensive and carbon unfriendly. And there are lakes all over the place where people swim in the summer.

I am about to be banned from another travel site for telling the truth. This means I will waste less time on useless crap. Telling the truth is among the most serious and unforgiveable offenses. Particularly when nobody wants to hear it. While in a relationship, it is worse still. Being right is a felony then.

Everybody was getting ready to get off the train a little too early today. I knew how long it would take to arrive, but we were already 20 minutes late, and people were impatient. For more than four hours I had been observing the Filipino family in the section just ahead, and I found them extremely annoying, particularly the two year old. He was no worse than most toddlers except that he had already learned that he could boss his nanny around (also a Filipina), and the mother and father seemed to think that he was learning important skills. So I was more than ready to see them leave. But as the grandmother tottered down the aisle, she suddenly said to me "Don't forget your wallet." It was lying on the carpet in front of me!

Great news indeed, casimira! You'll be there every day taking photos? I hope you'll share some here. The preliminary steps on the ground seem to take forever so it'll be a while till you see the house actually taking shape, but any progress will be satisfying.

Thanks, good people!
The preexisting house was demolished some time ago. Difficult to pinpoint when as all the days and months are foggy.
Barring no impediments i.e., weather (we don't use the H word here) it should go swimmingly. The team is just as amped as we are.
They told me to start shopping now for appliances etc. as there may be a wait for certain things. I think it is premature but, will start perusing sites in order to decide on specific items to get a better idea of what prices etc. are etc.

Casi, they aren’t kidding about shopping early. You could inquire as to how long things will take to arrive at the appliance stores. Maybe they can hold some items for you.
We wanted a new sofa and needed to pick out a fabric that harmonizes with other things in the room. We were told 6 to 9 months for it to be ready for us! However, the showrooms are busting at the seams with pieces already made and delivered. They have warehouses full of furniture with no room to display. The supply chain may have busted loose all at once.
May I suggest you get a notebook or journal for the house project and keep track of all the progress at the new place.
Date each visit to the site and if the builder isn’t there, jot down any questions or changes you need to discuss with your contractor.
You can also keep notes on your shopping excursions. Or online shopping. I have a hard time remembering what I saw where and for how much.
We did this when we built the lake cottage and it was ever so helpful, as well as a memento 11 years later.
Have fun!

... online shopping. I have a hard time remembering what I saw where and for how much. getpocket.com/ <-- This is the most wonderful tool, which I've been using for years. When you save stuff, it's saved in tiles & text, so you don't have to wonder what it is, as you do with bookmarks. You can also read saved stuff offline. Here's a portion of "My List" in Pocket:

I suppose that after all this wait time with not much to do then suddenly thrust into having to produce a list of everything for the subcontractors they have lined up (plumber, electrician in particular) is daunting and overwhelming. I'll rally in short order and use most of the weekend perusing sites etc.
Thanks for all the advice good people.
