I sprained my ankle today. There are a few idiots with metal detectors around here and they often don't refill the holes they dig when out looking for ring pulls and bottle tops. The nature reserve, golf course and playing field are full of little holes in the long grass (and on the mowed areas too). Thought I'd avoided them all but no...out with the dog this morning I came a cropper and wrenched my ankle dagnammit.
Didnt dare take my shoe off as immediately after getting home I had an appointment with our Practice Nurse for my asthma and hay fever review...normally I would walk to the surgery but Jeff had to take me in the car...the nurse was kind enough to take a look during the consultation...it's a nasty sprain but she reckons that with rest it should be ok...no need to worry.
It's quite painful but I can hobble about so it could be worse. By George its swollen up...thank goodness for wtch hazel and arnica gel...

One thing that I don't like is the fact that (due to age, I suppose), I have less sensitivity to minor injuries -- mostly scratches or bumps on my lower legs and feet. I find that I have been bleeding for an hour sometimes and have no idea how I injured myself. and of course these things don't heal nearly as quickly as they used to.

What a pain! I think everyone who uses those areas in the normal way -- golfers, ramblers, ball players, nature lovers, etc. -- should be rallied and have the municipality threaten to ban all detecting the next time an unfilled detectorist's hole is detected. That might encourage them to be more considerate. So sorry this happened to you. And ditto, Kerouac, on the thin skin. The last time I blundered into something (the catch on the bathroom door), it peeled the skin up as though it were a nylon stocking.

I'm quite a clumsy so and so. When I worked long shifts I would always be bumping into the benches. Even now Jeff's always saying 'where did THAT bruise come from?'
Ooh you should see my puffy ankle...

Cold and rest should do it, Cheery, although I suppose you make it cold right after the injury. Well, rest then, with your foot raised a bit.

Re: bruising ~ Someone here can correct me on this, but I think my information is right: Sometimes bruising easily can be the result of a deficiency of certain vitamins, probably the Bs. When I smoked I bruised easily -- the kind Cheery describes of "Where did THAT bruise come from?". When I quit smoking, thus quit depleting B vitamins, I had far fewer bruises. Keep in mind that another thing that depletes the Bs is stress -- and a lack of B vitamins ups the stress level, creating a vicious cycle.

As bjd says... elevate the leg , chill the bruise for 15 minutes every couple of hours for 1-3 days, use paracetamol rather than aspirin or ibuprofen for pain. Bixa put me on to Arnica gel which I find marvelous for fixing bruises very quickly. Eat toast and vegemite...bung full of all the vitamins B. (optional)

Well...despite my use of arnica gel, elevating and resting my foot...the bruise is coming out. It's very pretty purple pink, yellow and black I had to go into town yesterday...that combined with a short walk with the dog has caused the ankle to puff up again. Not excruciating or owt..but sore. Think I was a bit daft going out yesterday.

Daft as a brush, Dear Cheery. Didn't I have REST as part of your care package? No matter, the bruise coming out in technicolor is good. a) all the internal bleeding is being hoovered up from the pool inside your skin and b) you can show your friends the reason you are hobbling and receive sympathy and (hopefully) coffee and cake at your usual cafe. Continue with rest and try a not-too-tight bandage if you have to go gadding about.

Not sure if it was an injury, but last night I had utterly excruciating back pain. Yes, I did some housecleaning, but nothing that should have caused such discomfort. Better now but I still have some corners to clean and things (not dirty, just messy) that Livia has batted into odd places. I did take some ibuprofen, but would prefer a non-medical solution.

No maid, ever. And I've never been one, even when destitute long ago, as I'm fussy but far too slow. As for the buff masseur, non merci. I don't like that type of situation.

I fell in the shower last night. No serious damage, but a couple of points really hurt and still do. Not to mention the tricky aspect of getting up without any serious damage. I did manage to improvise just now with a plastic and metal balcony chair, as not taking a shower in this heat would mean a nasty night. I'm actually very relieved as I thought I might have to abstain from cycling for a while. I did today, but expect to be fine tomorrow. I must get one of those diagonal bars for showers and find someone who can instal it.

Please do, Lagatta. Check with your local "aged Care" people. They would have a list of approved installers. They may even have a plan for subsidised installation of rails beside steps as well. It is common to lose confidence after a fall so remember the rule of "three points of contact".You will feel much safer.

So very sorry, LaGatta. That is scary. It's so damned easy to fall in the shower, too.

Oh Lagatta! I wish we lived a little closer, my husband would surely have done that for you. I hope your bumps and bruises heal quickly and that you have a handrail installed soon.
After my injury, we renovated the bathroom in our bedroom. We bought this beautiful free standing claw foot tub. I have tried to get in it, but my brain can not understand how to get myself to sit down on the bottom, so it has been used once by my Aunt. I use the shower in the other bathroom since the injury. When we go to a hotel I have to make sure there is a shower and if it is in a tub, I have my husband help me.

I tripped and fell when I lost my balance on a walk on the road the other day. Thankfully my husband was with me. Bruised and swollen knee. I hope to do better tomorrow.

By the way, Ladies, Are you on blood thinning medications? Various meds will cause your thinner blood to escape the blood vessels to pool as bruises or bleed more. This includes aspirin and ibuprofen. Stick to the paracetamol for pain. Vitamin K is the vitamin that counteracts bleeding...should be enough in healthy diet but check with doctor or pharmacist. I tripped on front door step 10 days ago. Slow motion fall which damaged all the soft tissue in right thigh and back, been in pain which is now getting better with arnica. It is now a terror to fall...as soon as I realize I am about to crash and can do nothing to stop it, I am scared what is going to break this time.

French pharmacists seem to be able to deal with much more than our pharmacists in the US, I was wondering if they are also able to remove sutures from a smallish incision once it’s healed.

I'm sure that some will and some won't. It is certainly not on the official list of their duties, such as bandaging (minor) wounds.

The very few and far between small pharmacies here, one I have used for over 20 years has a head pharmacist who has given me advise on treating minor injuries many times. He has saved me from having to go to an MD on many occasions. He has recommended homeopathic alternatives and advice that would have many people running to their MDs for a prescription that could help but at a cost. No major chain of pharmacies and their staff would ever do this. One of the phone calls I received the morning of our house fire was from one of the pharmacy staff inquiring as to whether or not any of our medications needed replacing. (The pharmacy's location is directly behind our property so they were very aware what was happening/happened).

Many pharmacies here have a "doc in a box" attached to them. If you want something from the drugstore that requires a prescription, such as a antibiotic, you can go next door, spend a dollar & see the doctor. Also, if you're poor, it's an affordable way to see a doctor. I got my covid test from that kind of doctor in tandem with one of the chain pharmacies. (it cost between $15 & $20)

, I was wondering if they are also able to remove sutures from a smallish incision once it’s healed. Checking and removing stitches is really very easy...I could talk you through it if you has someone there to be my fingers. At my café, I used to take out the stitches for the UK tourist boys who had got into fights with the locals. Only need pointed end scissors and tweezers, Cotton balls and Betadine. Your post is shown to be 3 hours after mine, it is 9am in my town now. Interested??
