Friend of mine bought a small teddy bear and knitted a beanie and scarf for it in red, yellow and blue - the local football team colours. She has a wool and craft shop so she put her teddy in the window. She had many people want one and also in the black, white and teal colours of the other major team. So she now had 2 teddies in the window and was giving away the patterns free to other knitters.
One day she gets a visit from the big bosses of the State football association who tell her she can't use those colors as they are copyright for the association, also can't sell teddies in those colours or close to them as all the sporting merchandise is handled by the association. If she continued in her wicked way there was a many thousand dollar fine or a spell in prison.
Teddy is still in the window in a bright pink, lime green and black outfit. You can help yourself to any one of the free patterns and it is a wool shop after all.
I think the same problems may follow if you start making characters that are already franchised to any of the registered merchandise companies that hold the copyright.
Be careful, Cheery. It is a long way for me to come to visit you in prison.

I think I've been lucky so far Questa. The gallery dont push me to make particular characters but it's obvious that they would like more 'Claire' dolls because the clients love them. I think I should steer clear. I have ideas for a steampunk type lady adventurer and a Heathcliff...

I'm choosing not to be too bothered by the closure of Cank Street Gallery and am still sewing away like a mad woman. Latest dollies. Made this one for a friend I'm playing with patterns atm and have made a mini doll...this is a prototype about 1/3 the usual size.

Totally delightful. If you made a doll reproduction of the London Anyport meetup, you would make a fortune by auctioning it off among us.

Be careful what you say to Cheery! She may already be at work making a complete group for each of us. The nurse doll is just perfect, Cheery. I very much like the mini doll, too, and hope to see where you go with that idea.

Does the beautiful Claire like Terry Pratchett? I see she has read Alice in Wonderland and nibbled the cake to get smaller. What next? I love your Nursing Sister...so much character.

Thank you for the lovely comments.... I would like to make some Terry Pratchett characters but only for my step-Granddaughter...she loves TP (called her dog Esmerelda!) even tho we're not close I think that a Nanny Ogg would go down very well and up me in the Grandma stakes.....

Unexpected gifts from people who are not necessarily close can often change absolutely everything.

I've just caught up - they are all amazing Cheery but my absolute favourite is Jimmy Hendrix. I often think I would like to do something creative but never seem to get down to it ; I think its good for the soul.

Tht's jolly nice of you to say lugg. I am still waiting to hear from the gallery owner which ones sold and which ones she's returning to me. I enjoyed making them so much. Now that the gallery has closed I'm a bit bereft, not knowing what to make next. I need to make a doll for my GD and my nieces have started acting up I made a Claire for ME last week...altho I've not made her teddy yet.

The gallery owner needs to get on the stick. Yes, she's had her setbacks, but the gallery closing was a setback for you also. I hope you can find out from her about any inquiries made about your dolls. Have you thought about approaching galleries further afield?

It's onlyy been a few weeks. There will be another Open exhibition soon so I can enter a doll or three, hopefully I'll make some connections there. This is my Claire... (until a family member steals her) in the meantime, I'm making cushion covers...I love the fabric!

Cushion fabric is fascinating, reminds me of Persian scrolls and tendrils. Cheery, you have found the secret that the wise writer (I've forgotten who)said..."Happiness is finding something you love doing... and get paid for doing it".

Cheery, would it be worth renting a stall or something in front of the busiest area of Leicester? Is there some kind of market there? Your husband could do the selling while you make things.

That is so nice of you to say amboselli, thank you Started a character doll for my step-granddaughter Victoria. It will (hopefully) be a Granny Weatherwax doll...her favourite Terry Pratchett character.

bjd I thought about selling at a craft fair, I dont have enough for a stall on my own and I think that most people wouldn't want to pay what the gallery was selling them for. I'll carry on making them and see if any opportunities arise. I can always give them away!

It's fascinating to see the material before you start making the doll.
I would like to encourage you to start stockpiling dolls for a craft fair (maybe in 2020), but I'm afraid that you would become overwhelmed when they sold out and you had to tell people that there are no others available until further notice.

I love the mini doll. Marie just decided she needed her dolls that were in the attic. I told her ok but the barbiez should go up. Guess what. I lost.

I love the pillow cover Cheery! I would buy one in that pattern/colour in an instant. You do these just for yourself though I assume? At our Fabricland store I enjoy going through the piles of pillow covers, looking for fabric patterns I like.

Oh Dear...you made the Great Error of Father-hood...never get between a girl of a certain age and her Barbie dolls. You simply can't win. Just sit back and think of the mothering skills she is learning.

There are lots of girls who don't/didn't like Barbie dolls -- my own daughter among them. I never had any either. At the local junk store, there is a whole box of them.

I detest them and swore if I had a girl there would be no Barbie dolls. Fortunately 2 boys and a house full of Matchbox vehicles and Tonka earth-movers.

I really wanted a Barbie...I had a Sindy and had to make her clothes myself as the outfits were too expensive (and a waste of money I was told) Mum used to make outfits for my Tiny Tears and dolly Sarah and my Dad made a little wardrobe, beds and cots...I wish I'd kept some but Mum gave everything to my sister when I left home As you seem interested...well Kerouac did and you know me, ANY excuse to show off...thought I'd post a few pics as I make this Granny Weatherwax for Victoria.
