Congratulations Mick! It must feel great to be free!
My youngest daughter and I have both been recently exposed by another family member who works in a medical setting. So far, we are both testing negative, but it’s certainly thrown a kink into our plans, not to mention the fact that neither of us want/need Covid.

I am booked to fly to Sydney on the 26th July...and am paranoid about getting the dreaded lurgy and being unable to go. I will only have 2 days there and it is probable we won't be able to have our group get togethers any more.

questa, why do you fear the group get-togethers are coming to an end, if I may ask?

We are all 80 now and it is getting too hard to gather together logistically. Fae is in NZ with a dependent spouse, Lenore in Brisbane but hates the airport, June is in a rural town and would need to train, bus etc. For 4 hours. I have to fly from Adelaide... check-in 4am for the 6am red-eye, Jennifer, Robyn, Heather, Margie and Jill are in Sydney and have a better chance of getting together. Three of our group have died too young.
From my octogenarian wisdom box I give you this advice...HAVE FUN ! there is not much of it this end of our lives so seize every opportunity to have some lols rather than a snork (good as they are)!

Yes it is, Questa ~ thank you. It seems particularly pertinent now, when everyone plans and activities have been curtailed by covid for so long. I hope this reunions is super fun for you, and that maybe it won't be the last one.

This graph says more about the number of jabs of each manufacturer’s vaccine given than it does about the efficacy of each vaccine, which would be more useful information, wouldn’t it?

I don't know, Kimby, since I read the article as well as looked at the picture. You might want to write to The Economist with your critique.

I would prefer statistics on how many people died in spite of receiving these vaccines. After all, it is rather audacious to say that people who got covid but survived were "saved" by a vaccine when there are so many other factors involved. It would also be necessary to compare countries with comparable medical services and not just the brand of vaccine that was used.

Perhaps this dying forum needs to form a committee to vet each and every post. That might avoid some of the pettish and pointless comments by the cranky elderly who enjoy nit-picking what others post, while not contributing anything of substance in its stead. It's of a piece with the rude cherry picking on travel threads or any show & tell threads -- hardly the kind of thing that encourages the membership to work up contributions to anyport.

I had my first covid test ever this morning since I have to show it to the authorities tomorrow. And I had to pay 50 euros for it to respect the timing obligation. If I had been able to get the test in France yesterday, it would have been free.

The 8th wave has begun in France due to children returning to school last week and bringing covid home. It is not considered serious so far since just about everybody is vaccinated, so the symptoms of omicron are mild and short. However, the unvaccinated holdouts have something about which to worry.

I wonder how many grandparents have quietly snuck off and had the shots while minding the kids over the school vacations. They would remember the bad old days and the epidemics of polio and measles and take action themselves.

The Kimbys have so far avoided catching COVID, but my sister and her new husband both caught COVID, both took Paxlovid and isolated for 5 days, both went back to regular activities (masked at first) and both came down with rebound cases of COVID this week. They though it was just a cold or allergies, till they tested positive.
I wonder how many COVID virgins are left out there? We’ll be getting our variant ba5 boosters (shot #5) soon.

Kimby, are those ba5s already available where you are?
I'm going to the US in a week & am hoping I can get the booster too.
It appears that I don't have even have to produce proof of vaccination, although I would if I were a non-citizen of the US. (it's recommended to have the proof, though) Also, no covid test is required nor is mask-wearing on the plane.
I sure felt way more secure the last time I flew, when I knew everyone had been tested before boarding & everyone had to stay masked up.

My husband and I still haven't caught covid, at least as far as I know, even though all our children, grandchildren and many of our neighbours had it. I see a few masked people (usually old) at the supermarket, but yesterday I went to a municipal meeting in a large hall, there were 350 people and none were masked.I have only had the first booster, last December, but have no plans on getting more for the time being.
I read that the number of covid cases in France doubled in the past week, since kids went back to school and most people are back at work after the summer holidays. They are talking about an 8th wave. Hospital numbers are still low, as are deaths.

I sure felt way more secure the last time I flew, when I knew everyone had been tested before boarding & everyone had to stay masked up. The newest boosters are just starting to become available in Florida. I doubt it will be difficult to get one anywhere in the US since most people don’t seem to be in much of a hurry. CVS, Walgreen’s, etc, are typically the easiest places to get vaccinated. It used to be you could sign up online for vaccines so you might check their websites. I’ve only gotten my Covid vaccines from my local health center or local pharmacy, and each time I showed my vaccine card so they could add an update. I’m guessing, if I showed up with proof of vaccines from another country, they would give me the shot and issue a CDC card for that vaccine. Not sure though. As for flying, my doctor, who is overly conservative in a medical sense, is convinced the air inside planes is much cleaner once they’ve closed the doors because air filtering has become so advanced. I’ve flown a few times with no mask requirements. I’ve kept my mask on in the terminals, but usually remove it once the flight is in progress. Maybe I’ve just been lucky. So far, since the beginning, I have yet to test positive for Covid.

Bixa - you should have no problem getting a booster. In California, Safeway, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid all have vaccines. They are also still free.
