It has nothing to do with efficacy, IMO, and everything to do with demand far exceeding supply. They are also saying that one of the reasons that China has recovered so quickly from the epidemic is that everyone in China is used to wearing masks to prevent spread of germs.

There is so much confusing. contradictory and conflicting information in this thread. I think I will give it a rest for awhile.
It's all too much.

We have to take care of our psyches as well as our bodies. For me it’s to mine the information that’s out there.
For you, perhaps gardening would be more reassuring. Hope we will continue seeing you elsewhere on Any Port, casi.

I've been calling it CoRvid 19 not CoVid 19.
....bugger...
Don't know why...I saw it written that way somewhere and thought that was the correct way to spell it. In my defence my tablet automatically puts it the incorrect spelling.
Thank you for not pulling me up about it, you chaps are really special xxx

Just taken dog for a walk. The river is still flowing, ducks still swimming, swan still nesting and birds still singing. There is a normal world out there. We are under strict instructions NOT to walk the dawg! It was ignored on day 2 of the lockdown and our local police station sent out a patrol car and warned the dawg walker to bugger o0ff into their own yards. I'm not sure if they were find but it also can mean a jail sentence if persisted. The chief of Police who looks like one mean version of John Wayne ( also wears a hat at all times) issued the dawg warning on TV to the whole nation.

There does seem to be a growing conviction (in other words I'm hearing/seeing it more and more often) that the WHO is misleading the populace in order to make sure masks are available to medical personal. In simple terms, the WHO are lying in order to preserve the masks available. Can't really see it myself but I'm open to persuasion.

I might have mentioned this somewhere but my sn was asked to open our fabric business on the first day of the lockdown so that a manufacturer could get the necessary fabric to make thousands of masks. Since then he gets calls daily to supply more fabric to other people sewing for all its worth. I have about 8 masks left out of the dozen I bought from my pharmacy before the shit hit the fan. I doubt whether I will get to wear one as our supermarket is delivering door to door. Only thing I will need will be fresh or frozen veg. I still have 4 nice heads of a type of Asian spinach growing in my garden but not much else.

Tod, do you have a way to defend your garden from looters?
Only partly kidding. This feels so much like a post apocalyptic novel. Except with TV, internet and electricity.

I listened to the radio this morning. They interview doctors every day and people can call in with their questions. This is the national news radio program (France Info), not a talk show. Anyway, this morning the mask question came up again. The infectious diseases doctor interviewed reiterated that masks are useful in public only if a person is sick, so this person will not spread germs. However, he said that when he is not at work at the hospital, he does not wear a mask, even when he takes public transport to go home.
He said masks give a false sense of security and people in Japan or Taiwan wear them when they are sick, not when others are sick. Also for air pollution. He also said it's better to wash your hands often than to wear gloves.

A spike in the Montréal area, after Hassidic communities flouted advisories and travelled to NYC for Purim (and vice-versa) to celebrate the holiday - and also hold large group (arranged) wedding ceremonies. Sheesh, fundamentalists, whatever the faith... www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/tash-boisbriand-covid-19-1.5514517On Radio-Canada this morning, they were interviewing a doctor from the Jewish General Hospital who was trying to be diplomatic (as he was striving not the antagonise the fundies) but who was obviously infuriated by such wilful ignorance.

Sheesh, fundamentalists, whatever the faith... I saw that the ultra-orthodox Jews in Israel appear to be dropping like flies since they refuse to follow any of the rules. I never thought they would be more stupid that Islamic fundamentalists, but there you go. Meanwhile, in southwest France they have already had to hospitalise 10 peop1e for self-medicating with chloroquine. Gatwick airport in London and Orly airport in Paris are being closed until further notice.

Kimby- Oh goodness no! with only 6 days into lockdown and many people moving around collecting "Grants" which is a hand out from the Government which I have paid into all my working life but am not entitled to because I worked hard, put savings aside for a rainy day, and built up a thriving business. The receivers of such handouts are what I can only refer to as "the uninformed" multitudes. They have distrusted banks and had their money stolen by groups called Stokvels" - a banking system devised many years ago by goodness knows who. Anyway, It is early days. The groceries have not run out for millions, but only starvation will make people want too loot. I don't think it will ever come to that as the various church organisations will get plenty cash from the government to feed the hoards.

Some are suggesting that Cuomo should replace both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders as our democratic candidate.
He’s certainly been acting more presidential than the POS POTUS we’re stuck with for now...

Numbers are ramping up here. I like Cuomo, he seems a no nonsense sort of chap and he explains things clearly.... he also looks like a man worried for his people. Not like The Orange Blimp who can barely string a sentence together and is appallingly insincere.
Our son is desperate for us not to go grocery shopping, I've been trying to do an online order for days but it's been impossible get a delivery slot. The stores put on 2 days at a time at midnight,12 delivery slots for each day. Russ asked me for my list a few days ago and has tried to book every night but failed every time. Last night he managed to get us a slot for 21st April (the first one available)! He has added cigarettes, chocolate and crisps to the list but as he's paying I'm not arguing (he owes us rent...he makes a small contribution to the family budget) . Its a relief not to have to worry about shopping for a while.

People who do that to their cats should be infested with vermin. I'd gladly kill them (the so-called humans) but don't want to do the time, or go down there for any reason. Idem to their doggies, obviously.
Cats are self-cleaning.

Of the 7 new cases in Montana’s two major college towns, 6 are young people aged 20-29. Returning spring-breakers, I’m thinking. The 7th is 30-39.

Also,if you wear glasses, masks are inclined to fog them up.

Those cruise ships have been making the international news, Huckle. I saw that the Vaandam was finally given permission to pass through the Panama Canal after offloading some healthy passengers onto another ship belonging to the same company. But indeed, I saw an interview with the governor of Florida saying he wouldn't let people off. Given the number of empty hotel rooms now, I would let people off in keep them quarantined for 2 weeks. At least in Florida, there might be health services available, unlike on a small island. And what do they do with the dead bodies on board?
And although cruise ships are known for feeding people huge amounts, how long will they be able to float around without being re-supplied.
If the owner is American (or Israeli-American)he should take responsibility for his ships. Trump wants to help the cruise industry with his bailout anyway.

There is some confusion over who needs face masks here, other public servants feel that they should have them. In hospitals, as Questa has said...they are usually worn to protect the patient, not the wearer. In the case of protecting the nurse, doctor or other healthcare worker during a viral outbreak then highly specialised masks are used, not the usual paper ones and they are in short supply. I think that intensive care and emergency rooms are a priority, and rightly so.
I'm reasonably certain(ish) that the government is doing it's best to protect us and keep the NHS going, I suppose that it's inevitable that a UK government would be complacent and hang back when this all kicked off in China because well...it might have fizzled out.
Has every country set up these massive temporary hospitals? We've got The Nightingale (4,000 beds) in London but others are planned for Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast.
Worryingly a 13 year old and a 19 year old, neither with underlying conditions were amongst the latest fatalities here.

One thing that I have not read anywhere in light of the information that the virus can penetrate through your eyes is how great the risk is. All of the ICU doctors and nurses wear face shields in addition to their masks, but is the "eye risk" 5% or 40%, for example? If the eye risk is high, it doesn't make much sense for the general public to wear masks without face shields.

I just had a quick google about eyes and it seems more that eyes can be infected by being touched rather than any infected droplets going in. The various sites I looked at mainluy said to wear glasses rather than contact lenses, since you are less likely to touch your eyes with glasses on,as well as glasses acting as an extra protective barrier.
About young people dying, perhaps they indeed had underlying conditions but these were simply not known.

They are even using T-Shirting also known as Cotton Knit. My son is at5 work this very moment ping reps together for fabric but also for elastic. We are now unearthing stocks of panty elastic which has been in storage for over 10 years. We are very happy to get rid of it and at least know that we can meet our staff salaries at the end of April.
