It looks like Italy, Spain and France are reaching their peak. It will be nice when the numbers start to go down. Until numbers creep up in a 2nd peak as we all come out of hiding...

I get the impression I am taking things too casually. Your hospitalised friend has caught the virus from being too casual herself or someone else being too casual in her vicinity. For once, the Ozzies are doing what they are told. Drones patrol the places where people meet in parks etc and sound a siren if people are too close. The major telkom service has tracking capabilities and can supply information to"Them" where people are too close or where they shouldn't be. Still it is paying off. Our numbers are staying pretty good. Huh? Well, no. I do what I am told here -- keep distances, don't go out more than necessary for food and exercise. Furthermore, I live in the part of France that has the least number of infections, so it all feels a bit far away even as the shops are closed and the streets are empty. I'm sure it feels very different in large cities that are usually busy, but this is a small town that is only busy during tourist season. And parks and beaches are closed, so no drones here either. As for being monitored by cell phone, there have been discussions about privacy issues but since mine is usually at home...

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the privacy issues. When I first read what our Govt departments could do and the fact that we have given un-debated freedoms to various arms of the Law ,it gave me the shivers. Couldn't help thinking of "1984" and "A brave new world" and seeing we are all living in a strange environment...easy to spook myself.I live 4km from international airport and 200m from a heavy vehicle intersection. I can't get over how quiet it is now !

I am surprised at how obedient I have been, I get others to do my shopping for me, that is as much from idleness as anything else. Haven't been out apart from a few ambles round the block, which I had intended to do every day, but that hasn't happened, and an occasional stroll out into the close to talk to neighbours (at about 20 foot distance). I know that I am fireproof but want to set a good example, have joined in what has become a habit, standing on the doorstep at 8pm on Thursday evenings and clapping in appreciation of our health service. One good thing is coming out of this disaster, people are becoming less selfish, more willing to contribute to the common cause.

I heard an interview with an infectious diseases doctor at Paris's St Antoine Hospital, which is surrounded by apartments. She said that she usually leaves work around 8pm and the sound of people opening their windows or standing on balconies clapping for health workers warms her heart and lifts her mood.

Wish something could lift my mood. I feel so utterly useless these days; little paid or volunteer work, and the associations where I volunteer are all shut down. No inspiration whatover to paint, draw or write either, other than comments on boards. When I get my bicycle back from the shop that should lift my mood a bit... At least I have my pussycat.

You need to get out more. Err.... hang on minute...... (Sorry, couldn't resist)
I can see all sorts of statistics on all sorts of graphs/information etc, deaths per million population and so on, but I must have missed the statistics regarding deaths per people infected. Also, regarding the rapidity of an outbreak in a certain country. What I mean is, is the infection rate doubling in 2 days, 5 days or whatever.

Mark, have you googled the Johns Hopkins Hospital site. It has enough graphs and lists to keep any statistician happy for hours. It is the source for WHO.

Hope everyone is staying well and not going too stir crazy. I think here at home people are still not that convinced as so far we have low numbers and only 3 deaths ( I think) Most are following the rules but some are not.If you have the time and inclination this interview is so informative and really puts things into perspective. What a hero the man is, like many other key workers. And he has the added "bonus" of having recovered from it knowing what it is like personally.

Been looking at John Hopkins and Worldometers. Probably too much information and is difficult to wade through. I'll keep trying.

I like the Johns Hopkins presentation except for having completely split up certain countries (China, United States…) so that you can't really get an overview of the full situation.

Thanks for that, huckle! For me it's the easiest to read and understand that I've seen. I am surprised at how obedient I have been, I get others to do my shopping for me, that is as much from idleness as anything else. Yes, I didn't think I would be so strict when I first heard of this, but do feel it's important. I have gone out for fresh produce, but tried to keep myself safe. And I've order supermarket-type stuff from WalMart, as going there to shop seems too risky. the sound of people opening their windows or standing on balconies clapping for health workers warms her heart and lifts her mood. Yes! I thought of that when reading Mossie's post. I'd think it's not just the clapping, but also getting to see people in your neighborhood would give a lift. No inspiration whatover to paint, draw or write either, other than comments on boards. LaGatta, that's understandable and I really appreciate that you come on here to look around and comment. Seeing all of you that I "know" on here is encouraging. his interview is so informative and really puts things into perspective. And the fact that he seems guardedly optimistic and so down to earth makes his warnings about not getting casual about distancing, etc. really hit home. This is for htmb ~ Sorry it's paywalled, but you & your daughter might want to see it: www.nytimes.com/2020/04/03/realestate/coronavirus-moving-home.html

Not sure if this is fake news circulating but there is talk of our lockdown being extended until August. It has been predicted that our peak will hit in June during the winter. It has been a struggle already trying to keep people apart and off the streets.

It has been a struggle already trying to keep people apart and off the streets. I can't imagine that any government would be so clumsy to extend the lockdown so far in advance. For one thing, they have no idea when it will end and for another, in a country with so many people living hand to mouth, they cannot expect people to stop working for months.

Many thanks for the link, Bixa. Though this wasn’t her childhood home, some of the other situations reported in that article are similar. It’s probably a good thing for us that we are sharing and dividing up responsibilities, rather than falling into the old "parent/child trap" of her being more of a guest in MY home. Though we’ve had our moments, and have had to learn to tolerate the habits of the other, for the most part we are getting along and compromising. I also think we each feel supported and cared for.

there is talk of our lockdown being extended until August. There being "talk" about it seems completely normal to me. Everybody is hoping that it will not happen, but there have been countless allusions to this dragging on much longer than expected. The fact that the rest of the school year has been cancelled in a lot of countries shows that the authorities are not optimistic. France still hopes go get a final month of schooling in May or June, but the final examinations for high school (baccalauréat) and junior high (brevet) have mostly been cancelled this year. Diplomas will be given according to what the students accomplished before the schools closed.

A friend was tagged in a Facebook post of a “selfie” showing four people in close proximity, toasting the pandemic.
I’m so mad I could spit! He’s a chemist and a liberal and should know better.
But he’s also a divorced man living alone, and his friends were younger ladies, so his animal brain is thinking for him apparently.
I hope there are no old or immune-compromised people in their lives...

As with the French Bac, Cambridge International Examinations, the pre-college curriculum out of the University of Cambridge, have been cancelled. This includes Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level, Cambridge International AS & A Level, Cambridge AICE Diploma and Cambridge Pre-U. The examination period typically runs from the end of April to mid-June in many countries around the world, including the USA. A very complicated process of basing exam scores on coursework, previous performance, and instructor recommendation is being formulated. Not an easy task, considering the number of students it affects worldwide, Scores count towards college credit, AICE diplomas and can affect college admission.

Spoke online to my young friend in hospital with CoVid 19. Hadn't heard for a while so we were worried...but she was cracking jokes as usual...still on oxygen but managing to eat a tiny amount, sleeping a lot too. So that's good news. Beautiful day today, we had the garden chairs out. When I was out with the dog I saw my next door neighbour out with HER dog so we stood 12 ft apart and shouted greetings at each other. She likes gardening but can't get out to garden centres because they're all shut...so I made her up a care package of a variety of flower and vegetable seed in little envelopes, labelled them and put them in a bag. Put the bag on her front door and knocked. Shes happily in her greenhouse now sowing seeds

Oh, Cheery ~ I missed where you told that you had a friend in the hospital with covid19. Yes, I can well imagine that you worry. It does sound as though she's headed towards recovery. Thank goodness you all were able to talk online. ... we are getting along and compromising. I also think we each feel supported and cared for. That's great, Htmb. When you told that your daughter was moving in with you at least for the duration, I thought what a great idea it was. As you said, your place is bigger, plus I imagine you're surrounded by much more greenery than she would have been up in NYC. I suppose there are many people now stuck at home for whom togetherness is not working out, but y'all's planned togetherness sounds perfect.

A friendly neighbour a few doors down has moved to Saskatoon with her companion and above all their two doggies. I must have mentioned the little blind doggie and her own guide doggie. Normally we'd have met before but it was impossible. Next door neighbours of hers will be sending me her e-mail. She got a tenure track position at the University there, twinned with tasks at the regional antenna of the National Gallery of Canada, so it was not to turn down. Not that I have any great desire to go to Saskatoon, which is VERY cold, we have a most temperate climate in comparison! But I imagine that she'll be attending conferences and work meetings closer by, here or in Ottawa, once this nightmare is over. But I won't see the doggies! Hope she sends me videos.

Boris has been staying in the loop by video conference. If he is incapable of carrying on, albeit temporarily there is no deputy PM. The natural person one would have thought would be the Home Secretary (Priti Patel)...heaven forbid. Michael Gove will probably be the one chosen, but probably the most popular choice atm would be the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock.
