On the news this evening, they are showing where the (Chinese) victim in France died -- hôpital Bichat, the very same ward where I was confined for my mystery disease. I remember most of my symptoms being identical to the current disease. They showed the entrance to the building, the corridor with the confinement rooms, I recognised everything. I am wondering if the Chinese man died in my room. When I was there, everybody wore masks when they came into my room and when I was allowed to wander a bit in the corridor, I had to wear a mask too. It's all déjà vu for me.

I thought about your situation, Kerouac, when I read about the Chinese person dying. Apparently there is an adult daughter, too. Possibly at the same hospital. It sounds like she is in pretty good shape and it is expected she’ll soon be released, according to reports I read here (probably not as current as your information).

It's all déjà vu for me. What year was that Kerouac when you had your mystery illness? All this brings back memories of my husband's "mysterious" illness in 2016 which they eventually narrowed down to Guillian Barre Syndrome but, it was never really definitive and they never discovered what the pathogen was because they dragged their feet so long on taking blood cultures. Don't ever get really sick on a weekend because you're f'd until Monday and 48 hours later whatever you're afflicted with has all that time to morph into the next stage.

My boys, when growing up, ALWAYS kept their symptoms for weekends. One had chronic tonsillitis, the other occasional asthma. The excitement of going camping or a road trip seemed to set it off. My doctor would prescribe antibiotics but not to start unless really needed. The pharmacist would give me the a/b in powder form and the measured amount of water to mix it, so if my boy made a rapid recovery on Saturday, as usual, it wasn't wasted. The asthma also cleared when properly medicated.
Even my appendix waited for a Saturday, and was removed on the Sunday...after bloods done.

Here is the youtube channel of Sally and David Abel, the UK couple I wrote about who are on the cruise ship in Yokohama Harbour. They have been super positive but are starting to lose patience with the UK government. Apparently none of the UK passengers (about 40) have been contacted by anyone in an official capacity about any evacuation plans from the ship. They are awaiting their test results for the virus.
It appears that the American passengers are being evacuated off the ship to be brought to Travis Air Force base near San Francisco, as I type.

71,000+ cases, 1770 dead.
But it now seems that cases are slowing down in China with everybody locked up. Only one new case in Beijing yesterday.
1159 patients have fully recovered in China.

Sadly the British couple I posted about above have now tested positive for the virus.
Their latest youtube video is dubious, where they describe cruise ship personnel skulking around corrodors and taping up the air vents outside their cabin. Which leads me to believe that entire cruise ship is a floating petri dish and the virus is likely circulating in the air con system, infecting all.
The whole situation is very creepy and sad for these folks. Here is the video before they found out they are positive.

I had 2 mails from china on my mailbox. Both saying things were improving. Both thanking the authorities for theid actions. That is the part that scares me.

The numbers that China is reporting are all over the place. I read that 4500 had been ill but recovered, and over 1700 have died, so if you believe those numbers, that's a very high mortality rate percentage wise.

Post by kerouac2 on Feb 19, 2020 5:31:32 GMT
So we are now up to more than 2000 dead and 72,300 cases. It appears that more than 80% of the cases are mild, but as for the other cases, as usual, men are more likely to die than women.

Percentage-wise, the mortality rate is quite low according to news reports I have heard. And that most of the fatalities were either old or had previous health conditions.
This said, keeping that ship closed up is indeed creating a giant petri dish. And like Whatagain, I find people thanking the Chinese government scary, given that they arrest those who criticize government action in dealing with the situation.

In China, as with most of Asia, there is the over-riding culture of "Keeping Father Happy". This entails never telling a superior any bad news that may disturb them.
"Is the nuclear reactor about to explode?" "Oh no, sir.we had a little problem with a valve this morning, but it is being fixed now."
"Why are so many people getting sick and dying lately?" "Well it is the season, sir"...Later..."It seems some vials of the new flu virus were lost in the market place, sir,but we have closed down the city and then the country and destroyed the world's economy. The numbers of those dead and sick are being manipulated...sorry...collated, now. sir."

keeping that ship closed up is indeed creating a giant petri dish. And it appears that the quarantine methods aren't working: Authorities are taking suspected coronavirus patients to quarantine centres, sometimes forcibly.
The home quarantine policy could have caused clusters of cross-household and cross-community infections by allowing serious infections to progress without treatment, [the Chinese magazine] Caixin reported source

Tension is rising in Asia, even if it isn't the worst disease to hit the world.
2,200 deaths and 75,000 cases.
More cases in Beijing now, and a major outbreak in South Korea (we'll never know about North Korea). And there are of course the 630 cases on the Diamond Princess in Japan. Iran has had quite a few cases and also several deaths, and other countries have had their first cases (Lebanon, Israel…)
And there was that nasty incident in Ukraine yesterday. Disgraceful!

Here are the top five outside of China:
1. Japan: 738 cases, 3 deaths. (639 cases on Diamond Princess cruise ship and 99 on land.) 2. South Korea: 602 cases, 5 deaths 3. Italy: 132 cases, 2 deaths 4. Singapore: 89 cases 5. Hong Kong: 74 cases, 2 deaths

The reason for the number in South Korea though is similar to the boat thing because of the cult, no?

The reason for the number in South Korea though is similar to the boat thing because of the cult, no? Well, yes, it was a big cluster of people. The question is always who left the cluster before they quarantined them. The problems in Italy and Iran is not knowing exactly who has been spreading the virus.

The Chinese government just forbade the trade, selling and eating of wild animals. Allegedly there already was a law about it but full of loopholes. High time. Even with so many people, surely it's not necessary to eat bats, snakes and wolf puppies (all for sale at a stall in Wuhan's market). Or use them for medical purposes.

They are now up to 5 deaths in Italy. Maybe it is a stronger mutation… and more than 200 cases now.

We were chatting about CoV this morning, son is immunocompromised due to his medication so he was a bit worried... The death rate so far was 2% in Wuhan but considerably less elsewhere...the main cause of death seems to be from CoV infected individuals developing viral pneumonia (so no antibiotics)...usually patients with underlying health problems.
Does the fact that the virus jumped from animal to humans, and then went on to be transmitted from human to human suggests that it readily mutates? ...so it could maybe mutate to a more virulent form?

Italy is now up to 7 deaths. All viruses mutate. That's why the flu shots are completely different every year.

Bixa, I have also been looking into flight cancellation insurance. Pretty vague replies but what I have found in common in most of the responses is that (for Canadians) the Canadian Federal Government has to have a, specific to this virus, travel advisory in place to the country you are travelling to, in order to apply for the cancellation coverage. We are ready to book our flights for September but are undecided what to do. I have been sick 6 weeks this winter, 3 weeks before Christmas and have just recovered from a second 3 week bout of the cold/flu. I did have the flu shot in the middle of the two bouts. I have had pneumonia twice in the past so I think we will talk with my doctor first to see what he advises. We are looking at flying into Innsbruck (via Frankfurt) and out of Vienna, with a few days in and around Ljubljana, Slovenia. I'm of the same mind as replies #109 & 110. For laffs I just googled does travel insurance cover canceling because of coronavirus? and got a million hits. The bottom line was that the only travel insurance you should get if you thought you might cancel because of fear of coronavirus would be the Cancel For Any Reason kind.

Mich! I have been wondering where you were & am so sorry to hear you have been sick. Let's hope by September this thing will have run its course, but of course you don't want to wait until September to book. I want to travel in April, so you can imagine what all is going through my mind.

I want to travel in April, so you can imagine what all is going through my mind. Oh my Bixa! I would not know what to do in your case. Where do you hope to go? I am sure you have heard the latest news regarding cases in Italy? (Yes, I had little energy but tried to check in with Any Port every couple of days to try to keep up with everyone.)

I've decided next year I'm going on holiday to China. The virus will have died down by then and it'll be bloody cheap.
