Just a thought, but I'm sure rubbing alcohol in a water solution will make a home made water repellent for glass.

Thanks so much to all of you for the encouragement. I'm hoping that it won't be too long before I can show the final version.
Didn't know that about alcohol & water, but was idly thinking this morning that I needed to get some Windex. What would be the proportions of water to alcohol? The water here is full of minerals, so I'd like to stay on top of the problem.

White vinegar and water might be another thing to try.

One part rubbing alcohol to two parts water. Put in a spray bottle.

Thanks to you both! I really love using these kinds of homemade products instead of commercial stuff that often is mostly water, perfume, & some colorant.
I have a spray bottle with water that I use for wetting my hair. It has some vinegar in it on the theory that it will keep the little tube inside from clogging & might even make my hair shinier. But yes, water with more vinegar seems like a great cleaner for the glass & other surfaces.
I seem to remember some tip about putting alcohol on the bathroom mirror before showering to keep it from fogging up. Will absolutely try the alcohol/water for cleaning.
The mason returned last night to take measurements & give me the (extremely reasonable) estimate for his labor. He's also going to pick up the new "cespol" for me. The new sink does not line up with the hole in the wall used by the previous sink, which was the reason for using the accordion drain pipe, but he says no problem to change them out. The landlords are taking me out this evening to get the new toilet and (I hope) the floor tiles. Regardless, the mason says he doesn't have free time until next Sunday, i.e., not this weekend. So, no updates for a while.
Boy, he was right about the toilet tank being cracked. It was so close to the old vanity that the cracked part couldn't be seen. Also, because I sprayed cleaning product on it every time I cleaned it, I never realized that it was always slightly damp where the crack is.

If you can demonstrate it and video at the same time...........
Maybe get one of the workers to whilst you are using it. Interested to see the shoulder clearance and proper usage of the toilet roll holder.

You’re lucky the crack in the tank didn’t get worse while you were away on a trip. Especially since it’s on the second floor. I once returned home from a two week trip and found a little water on the tile floor of my 1/2 bath. The tank had a crack. Disaster narrowly avoided! I changed out the toilet and now make sure I turn water off to the whole place before leaving on trips.

Mark, I don't need the workers. As you know, facebook has made bathroom selfies fashionable. Yikes, Htmb! That is an excellent idea about turning off the water when leaving the house alone, something probably most people don't think of doing. Well, it's a slow news night here on Anyport, which seems like a good time to whip up some more breathless excitement over the progress of my bathroom. The mason called this afternoon wanting to know if he could come over and get a head start on the rest of the project, as he'd like to come finish it off tomorrow morning. Yes, please -- come on over! What he got done this afternoon was replacing the U-joint under the sink. (That's called a p-trap -- I looked it up) Said sink is now on the floor of my bedroom, removed there for safety so he could do the other stuff, which was removing the old toilet and filling in all holes caused by this step of the renovation. He'll be here at 7 am to put in the floor tiles and the new toilet. I am delighted, even though it means I'll have to come downstairs tonight if I have to pee. In the meantime ~

>>> It is done! <<<The pile of books is there to hold down a tile on that floor remaining from the inside of the original vanity cabinet. I am happy with how it looks and thrilled to have the work over with. Thanks to all of you for cheering me on.

Thank you!! And you were nice enough to say that even though I posted the same picture twice. (fixed now)
The western sun shining through the shower surround made the pictures come out dark, so really, it looks lighter, brighter & nicer than the photos.

That looks just the thing. Opens up the area well, better floor tiles, a lot more airy, fittings look better, a lot cleaner style, a lot easier to keep clean and the toilet roll holder bar has been moved across to add the finishing touch. Be careful you don't catch the corner of the sink unit when you come off the toilet or you'll end up like Houdini. All in all, a good job.

Be careful you don't catch the corner of the sink unit when you come off the toilet It was hard to get an accurate photo, since the room is so long and narrow, but the vanity is not nearly as close to the toilet as it appears in the pictures. The only way I could catch the corner would be to fall sideways as I exited the throne. (could happen ) It will be so much easier to see the roaches now Ain't got any! Very classy, and I thought the books were for meditation whilst on the bog. Not adverse to the idea. Maybe a discreet shelf with a set of encyclopedias? Now all it needs is a little vase of artificial flowers to gather dust brighten it up. No frou-frou for my pièce du poo-poo! Many thanks to all of you for the kind words & excellent suggestions. Bjd & Cheery, I in fact do have some nice towels & a good fluffy colorful bath mat, but wanted you all to see the stripped down finished bathroom.

I agree with a bright color choice of towels, have you thought of what color you would like? Maybe something patterned would be also be a thought. I really like the overall look. I can understand why you are delighted.
The past few holidays we have unplugged almost everything in the house, including the hot water tank. We also switch off the water coming into the pressure tank into the house. We get our water from a submersible pump about 20 feet down in the lake. We also keep the propane tank turned off (gas fireplaces).

Mich, I already have some nice towels. They're all solid colors & chosen to go with the cheerful striped bath mat. Thanks for the compliment!
I have someone stay in my house when I go away, but always keep the pilot turned off to the boiler unless I want to heat it for a shower. Of course I don't have to worry about pipes freezing here, so that's one worry I left behind in the States.

That is lovely! I don't have any loo or sink (lavabo) problems, but so wish I could get rid of the stupid bathtub. I take showers, never baths. Suppose it has to remain a bath in case there is a co-op member with a small child.

Well? How is your new bathroom behaving? Is it as good as you hoped, No glitches? Questa, thanks for asking. It's pathetic how much I love my bathroom! I'm weaning myself off of just going in there to admire it. I could get rid of the stupid bathtub. I take showers, never baths. Suppose it has to remain a bath in case there is a co-op member with a small child. I hardly ever want a bath as opposed to a shower, and think of baths as more therapeutic than luxurious. I guess if you ever decided you wanted to take the plunge (ha ha) & convert to just shower, you could find out if the co-op allows that. The bathtubs in older places in France really shocked me -- such high sides, guaranteed to be dangerous. I imagine only the Japanese have deeper tubs.

When we renovated the en-suite bathroom, I spent a fair bit of time finding the perfect bath tub, a nice claw foot deep tub. But due to my brain injury I can not use it. I can not understand how to sit down in it. There are some little things I will probably never be able to do again, this is one of them. I am fortunate to have a shower in the downstairs bathroom, but I was a bath person.
What colour towels did you choose Bixa?
