Hedgehog loses its prickles Spud the hedgehog was taken to St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Aylesbury, Bucks, last summer suffering from a major skin problem. It caused his skin to dry and his spines to fall out. Staff are baffled about his condition as all results from biopsies so far have come back clear. Everyday he has a warm bath and a massage with baby oil and other than the obvious problems he acts like a normal hedgehog. The hospital is currently seeking some ideas of alternative medicines that can try to clear up his condition.

I think he looks kind of embarassed. Like a sheep after a shave.

mmm...I contacted the hospital and the wee hedgehog will soon go to Paris, where he will be rehabilitated, living with Kerouac...nibbling at the mint on the balcony, enjoying the street below, and following K2 from room to room...nipping at his heels.

I had a friend whose Jack Russell used to hunt around surrounding fields for hedgehogs and then tear them apart despite the long prickles. I remember my friend used to call them hedgepigs. Poor things.
If I saw a hedgepig in my garden I used to leave a saucer of bread and milk and/or catfood for it.

A serious question (probably wasted here : : Is Spud someone's pet, or is this a wild hedgehog whose condition might raise serious concerns about the environment? (You could ask him, Iain, rather than hurt him pointlessly by repeating unkind remarks.)

Well I spoke with him this morning and he is not a happy hedgehog. He asks if anyone can send him some sunblock for the British summer which starts tomorrow (well summerTIME anyway). Bixa, I am not going to repeat what he thought of your comments!

Is he completely nekkid? He looks to me as if he has an undercoat of fur, or fuzz. Even cats do - they have longer, harder guard hairs and soft fuzz beneath. Guard hairs could easily have evolved to prickles.
I think he is sweet, by the way.

Spud is very endearing. I am sure that he looks forward each day to his warm bath and loving massage with baby oil.

I would be afraid of his putrefying skin flakes clogging up my sink.
