Thanks for the link Lugg. I remember visiting Hay-on-Wye very vividly! After being announced in the town by a jolly rotund gentleman in the outfit of a Town Crier, we perused the millions of books indoors and out. Eventually I picked out two Daphne Du Maurier books with old worn covers. We had been holidaying in Foye and of course saw her house by boat on the shore of the estuary. I will be keeping my eye on this festival - thanks!

I guess the great thing for you tod is that the time difference should not be too problematic if you decide to view any of the programme

So Hay festival starts again shortly ... Covid is over and it is back to normal but there are opportunities to join in on line ... search the link below if interested www.hayfestival.com/homeI am so excited to be there again ... tickets booked for Saturday and Monday but lots of free events in between....sampling the fab food and music. which of course is a huge part of the festival. 3 events booked , all so different , Saturday : I am going to be star gazing when attending a talk by Maggie Aderin-Pocock, not sure if there will be any Barbie dolls , news.sky.com/story/reach-for-the-stars-british-scientist-maggie-aderin-pocock-honoured-with-her-own-barbie-doll-12827715 and then a complete about turn listening and hoping to get some cooking tips from Rukmini Iye. www.rukmini-iyer.com/ Monday ... completely different again, really looking forward to Jeremy Bowen ... The BBC’s International Editor has covered the Middle East since 1989 and is uniquely placed to explain its complex past and troubled present. In his new book, he meets ordinary men and women on the front line, their leaders, whether brutal or benign, and explores the power games that have so often wreaked devastation on civilian populations as those leaders, whatever their motives, jostle for political, religious and economic control. With his deep understanding of the political, cultural and religious differences between countries as diverse as Erdoğan’s Turkey, Assad's Syria and Netanyahu's Israel, he offers readers an authoritative guide to the modern Middle East.Bowen is in conversation with Sune Engel Rasmussen, Correspondent at The Wall Street Journal covering Afghanistan, Iran and North European affairs.

Very nice, Lugg! And it must have been such a pleasure to be able to attend in person again. Aderin-Pocock looks like such an engaging speaker.

Fab. I hope to get to the Hay festival sometime.... I went to a lecture at the BAA annual meeting years ago where a recently retired Professor Claypole of cosmology talked about the birth, life and death of stars...he said that we were all made of cosmic effluent : D .... There is something amazing about having such things explained by a true expert in the field who is also a great communicator

Carl Sagan wrote "We are all star stuff" in one of his books in the 1970s.

What a well-attended festival! How impressive to see that many people eager for knowledge in one place. I clicked on the link you showed in the post with the packed auditorium and was amazed at how very much the Hay Festival offers.
Looking at the pictures, I was trying to get a feel for the weather. There is a blonde in the penultimate food tent picture who appears to be wearing a sleeveless leotard. But almost everyone else is in long sleeves and sweaters & wearing or carrying a jacket.

But inside the tents phew it was hot .

With that many people inside those tents, I can well imagine that it was uncomfortably stuffy.

This is wonderful, I admire Jeremy Bowen, he and a couple of other journalists manage to explain the politics, the economics and the other reasons behind conflicts in short reports packed with information. Whilst I realise that that's the job...not every journalist has the ability to explain things so succinctly.
