I am not sure there is not somewhere a thread on tips. This was an interesting debate on TA or Fodors with people fighting each other.
Since we are here more civilized, i wonder what are your habbits ?
And did Covid affect tour habbits ?

I live in Belgium and travel mostly in Europe. Tips has been included in the bill since before my birth i would say, or close.
So as a rule i don't tip.
I tip hairdressers, sometimes taxidrivers (when ghey talk and are friendly) and restaurants when they went the extra mile for the kids or the dog.

Well, you know very well that I don't tip, just "round up to the nearest euro" if I have not been annoyed by the service.
Those other websites are always fascinating for their tipping debates, mostly spawned by Americans who cannot imagine not tipping, even when they know that the salaries of servers are completely different in Europe.
The worst ones are the ones who say "I can afford to tip so I will give whatever I want!"

Yup. These are the worst. Howeversince Covid the rare times I get takeaway food i tip.
And i tip my way : the less i pay, the more i tip, considering the more i pay the more money they get from me and the less they need a tip.
But what about others ? For example i have never really understood how tipping goes in Germany. I dont but i often see people leaving small tips when they invite me. Do they want to impress me ?

I do like Kerouac, I round up. My husband doesn't like to do even that.
In Canada too, tips are expected and I find it annoying to be told to add 15% to what is already over-priced food because the staff isn't paid enough.
I don't tip hairdressers, in taxis I tend to round up too, but I haven't taken a taxi for ages.

We do tip 15% at restaurants, we tip our hairdresser and if we take a taxi.
When we travel outside of Canada, I research what the common practice is where we are going to. In France, Germany, Switzerland I believe we just rounded up to the nearest 5 or 10 dollar amount, generally equaling a couple of euro tip. We would leave 5 euro on desk in hotel room for maid service.

Maid service is interesting, glad you raised it. I spend literally my life in hotels and have never left anything for the maid. I clean the room when i leave, put the towels together.

Traditionally Australians do not tip, with the exception of rounding up taxi fares. They are given a living wage to start with. International tourism is changing this but the offer of a tip to a hairdresser or room cleaner would probably be turned down. Tips are usually given if the worker has gone "above and beyond" what is expected...carrying heavy bags, or a rush job fixing a car etc. This is a mystery for us when overseas, when to, how much, and to whom, especially when you are on a tight budget yourself. Almost as tricky as knowing how much to offer a "sweetie" (bribe) to get a perfectly legal transaction to take place, but that is another story!

Strangely enough, we never left tips after stays at hotels in Canada but we do now, it is a minimum wage job here as well as usually part-time positions. A friend’s daughter worked for a summer cleaning rooms, her stories encouraged us to leave the $5/night tip her as well. We always leave our room as clean as possible as well, but leave a note using the note pad and pen provided on the desk with a THANKYOU! 🙂 and the tip.

I just follow whatever the local custom is and think no more about it. I'm not emotionally invested in any particular custom.

This is an interesting historical look at the custom of tipping: What Created the American Crisis of Subminimum Pay?The first paragraph of the piece reads in full: The subminimum wage for tipped workers in this country is a direct legacy of slavery.Coincidentally, I am currently reading a novel with includes a great deal on the influx of enslaved and formerly enslaved people into Washington DC just before and after the Emancipation Proclamation. It was a lucky break to have this bit of background knowledge. The more history you know about anything, the more current events are likely to make sense! Anyway, beyond the subject matter of tipping, the article is illuminating on the subject of women's rights, workers' rights, racial and immigration history in the US, the origins of tipping in Europe, the concept of fair pay, etc., so overall a worthy read.

This is such an interesting subject for me. Never mind tipping at restaurants for good service - and in many cases service that has been poor but you feel sorry for the waiter because the chef is bad and you didn't enjoy your meal. In South Africa tipping for everything is a big deal. For instance: You park your car and go shopping - when you return there is someone waiting for a tip for making sure someone did - OR did not, steal your car. So, you tip the waiter, tip the Car Guard, then on the way home encounter a beggar at every traffic light who wants a few bucks. This daily adds up to hundreds of your local currency and is impossible to maintain so you see everyday in a guilt-ridden haze as you drive and shop.

I gave a 10 euro note to beggars in Paris last week. A very rare occurence for me. They were not begging, making ready to sleep on the street. I found it hard to sleep on the street.

Funny you should say that Whatagain. I was shocked to the core in Hong Kong. We had a set route to our hotel each day and I always saw the same very very old man sitting on a concrete ledge - not begging just there. Then I saw him lying down for the night. I couldn't help myself but bought him some food. Who knows if he was a "prop"or a genuine beggar. I was told there is no provision made for the elderly with no family to help.

There are obviously plenty of beggars in my neighbourhood, but I have learned to never give anything to the regulars near my building. Once you have done that, they seem to expect something every time you pass and it becomes like a toll fee to go home.

I was told there is no provision made for the elderly with no family to help. Ditto here. I get a laugh out of the fact that foreigners have to prove they have a certain amount of income in order to gain residency in Mexico. If I fall on hard times, the best I can hope for is to score a good sidewalk spot for my begging. But ........... giving to the indigent is not in any way related to the giving of gratuities to workers.
