I was absolutely amazed by this video which shows how an 18 year old went into the forest to build a log cabin all by himself -- chopping down trees, removing the bark, making logs... Already when a team is at work on such a project it seems incredibly hard, but it is unimaginable to do it all by yourself. How do you lift the logs into place when it is impossible for just one person to lift a log? He works through all of the seasons, in the rain, in the snow, in the heat of summer. There is a bit of cross country skiing and some dog sled action, but basically it is all just hard hard work.
This video lasts almost two hours, and as much as I would like to, I did not watch the whole thing -- I kept skipping ahead to see what would happen next. And every now and then I would back up to see something that I had missed. It looks like something that would completely take up 100% of one's time, so you wonder if he has a girlfriend (or boyfriend) to share his passion even though there was clearly another person involved to film the winter sports.
But there is one thing that is terribly disappointing in the video -- at the end, after all of this impressive and incredible work, the cabin is not yet finished! So I subscribed to his channel to see what happens now.

I watched about a fourth of the video and was fascinated by this young mans fierce determination and drive. It reminded me of a friend of mine whose nephew did something similar in the mountains of North Carolina. I saw the cabin a few years ago and was completely blown away by the craftsmanship. Oh how I would love to have a place like that to retreat to.

He has made a 15-minute version of his 2-hour video, but frankly the full version is better.

As much as I find the project admirable, I find it hard to fathom wanting to put so much effort into such a primitive and tiny result, especially when you "cheat" and use a real sawmill to get a lot of the lumber.

Eighteen is an interesting age. Young men seem to revert to "Warrior" mode and set out to make their mark on the world, for better or worse. What starts as a bit of a wish or a "I wonder what would happen if I..." turns into planning, research and action. I can imagine him thinking that everything turns out more expensive or more difficult than he had planned, but he still persists against the odds.
On the other hand he may do some practical thinking and conclude that the time spent could be better used helping out at a soup kitchen, or helping re-home rescue dogs.At least he isn't still taking his washing home for Mum to wash.
(I haven't watched the vid yet)

Crazy Erik continues, even though I think he is cheating a bit with the plastic sheeting on the roof. Also his nude bathing in the icy stream is a bit much since he wasn't even coming out of a sauna.
