I see nothing unfortunate about the name, which dates from the 17th century. It will probably benefit from this silliness among English speaking tourists who will want to pass through for no reason other than the name, the same way they go to Condom in southwest France. Then it will be faced with the problem of people stealing signs, like they always do.

Of course there has been a Place de Bitche on rue Crimee for a very long time. The name amused me when I first saw it but you get used to strange names when you're a tourist. And I bet I don't even pronounce it correctly.

Place de Bitche is the location of one of the fire stations that have delightful firemen's balls for the 14th of July, right at the foot of the historic Pont de Crimée. Several Anyporters have attended that ball and another Anyporter obtained a souvenir change purse from there as a prize from the annual raffle.

Oh, I don't think the name per se is unfortunate, just the sniggering among certain kinds of tourists. And yes, I enjoy the annual firemen's balls... Haven't attended one in far too long.
