Is there nothing here about Copa América? (I've always heard its name in Spanish; perhaps in this case the Portguese is the same).

I saw a few articles in the newspaper here, nothing major. And I also read something about the Gold Cup, which I feel that I had never heard of. It's the football championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, which just started. Curaçao just had to withdraw because of covid and was replaced by Guatemala.

It would have been on in the middle of the night in Europe, so nobody there would have been paying attention even minus the distraction of the Euros going on at the same time. The American game is so different from the European one, so much more cynical acting, and so many more shenanigans and hard collisions. Glad to see Messi get his first major international tournament win. I do love England dearly but as Italy is my adopted second country, I am obligated to cheer them on.

Living in Québec I am vaguely aware of the Gold Cup (what a stupid name - at least in Spanish it is the Copa de oro; in Québec, Martinique and I assume Haiti it remains Gold Cup in English) I think Mexico is the only half-decent side in that bunch. The Euro and even Copa América are much more popular here.
I turned in early so only heard a fair bit of honking (several cafés, bars and bistros here)and knew it wasn'the Euro yet assume that is was Argentina fans. Not a large contingent of either Argies or Brazilans here: perhaps people of Italian or Portuguese descent laying claim to New-World outposts. If Italy win the final there will be a lot of noise where I live... not that there is really much of an Italian presence anymore except for certain longstanding businesses and a couple of festivals that are only faint echos of the past.

I saw that Canada, the United States and Mexico are qualified automatically for the Gold Cup. I hope that the reason for this is because they pay the main expenses of the event (the same way certain countries are automatically qualified for Eurovision) and not some sort of political submission.

And so Italy wins.
I don't remember a championship where so many matches ended with penalty kicks, but perhaps I don't watch sufficient championships.

Not the greatest game. Either side could have won or lost.

Now comes the after.
English federation is sued/asked questions about : - fans using laser against danish goalkeeper - fans treating a young german of 'nazi'. Classy. Another Brit launched a crowdfunding for her and got 42 k, given by the parents to Unicef. - fans distupting every national hymn - fans being excessively racists (well normal level should be 0) against black players who missed their penalties.
Pfff. Not really linked to football nor Brittons but a testament to human nature.
Footnote : belgian fans burned french flags after their defeat, our fans are no better.

I don't know of any perfect fans. It's better to be just a supporter, not too intense. Unfortunately, a football match (or some other sport) is the only thing that a lot of people have in their lives.
