I admire them in other people's gardens. As with wisteria and a number of other plants, for various reasons I avoid having them take up valuable space in my garden. There are enough of them featured magnificently throughout the city for me to have to have one of my very own. It was by trial and error that I caught on to this mostly because of my experience of dealing with them when I had my little garden business. I may not have made a lot of money but, I surely gained invaluable knowledge of the plusses and minuses of many plants that I admire but don't necessarily have to have in my own garden space.

that I admire but don't necessarily have to have in my own garden space. That is exactly how I am getting the best of both worlds. My neighbor has a magnificent red Bougainvillea growing right next to our low diving wall, but it only blooms en masse on my side. I am guessing it is because of the direction of the sun. I have enormous white ones forming a hedge/barrier from the road but they must be facing the wrong way because they only bloom on a few long stems and then mostly at the tip. I think I am going to get a compass and just check the direction they are facing when in bloom.

The house that my parents bought in California had bougainvillea -- both red and purple -- of a perfect medium size along three of the garden walls. It bloomed furiously all the time. I enjoy the huge bougainvillea in tropical countries since I don't have to take care of it, but in California is was very easy to trim just a bit from time to time.

Thanks, all. Mick, your patio is so inviting. Your hostas sure are performing nicely. Is that a wooden deck step up to the house on the left? I love the grouping of your pot friends, Cheery, and adore the accent of that perfect Japanese maple. Is that a cute little teakettle the petunias are in?

Thanks mich.
It’s like the heaviest cold I’ve ever had with a vast amount of sneezing. Plus I’m sleeping badly.
Mrs Cactus is a few days ahead of me with periods of fatigue and hot flushes.
Not much fun.

GLORIOUS gardens!!!
Bixa, you have outdone yourself in utilizing the limited space you have into an absolute paradise/oasis. I am so blown away by your layering and other creative little tricks you've devised to achieve the optimum use of your space. No surprise to me but, out of all the gardens of yours that you created over the years, this one is a crowning achievement.
Mick, I love the relaxing atmosphere of your use of space as well. Ready for a Dark and Stormy evening cocktail? I'll hop the pond and be there in no time! (oh and do feel better I hope soon. I suffered through some kind of scuzz over the weekend. Mostly GI related but only lasted 48 hours thank goodness)
