Being abandoned once again.
Seems impossible to sort out.

Well, what the Soviets and the Americans did there is not really any different from what the French and the Americans did in Vietnam. In other words, lost and left.

We got the wrong end of the stick 100 years ago out there, the Russians and Americans have suffered the same fate. It is time we learnt the lesson, they hate foreign interference and love fighting, so we should let them sort themselves out. Their mindset is very different from ours.

And they took 20 years and hundreds of lives to achieve what...nothing. If you want a war to be won quickly and decisively, get a woman to run it. Brutal but short. Golda Meyer in Israel. Indira Gandhi in Pakistan War. Margaret Thatcher in the Falklands.
(yes, I've said this before.)

From what I've read in the news, it looks like non-taliban Afghanistan is already reaching its last gasp. If there is anything positive less negative about this, it seems that the "new" talibans are not quite as bad as the previous ones.

Maybe with 20 years of being exposed to the norms of the 21st century ( OK, the 20th century up in those mountains)the Taliban have realised that the rest of the world educate their boys and girls, immunise their kids without poisoning them and tend not to blow themselves up in market places. The terrain is high mountains cut through with steep valleys and each valley was cut off from its neighbours, making it easy for the so called war-lords to plunder and destroy. Having seen the foreign forces with all their technology and communication possibilities, the new Taliban may be waking up to what they are missing out on.
I just don't trust the "students" in the religious schools just over the border in Pakistan.

I think the opposite Questa. With their twisted religious justifications being suppressed due to the western influence they've had to endure they'll rebound in a worse fashion than before. "Collaborators" will be seen everywhere and punished harshly. They may well adjust their technology, but never their principles.

I agree with Mark. The Taliban were saying that they would allow girls to go to school and be less harsh than before, but in places where they have already taken over, they are as rigid as ever.
And not only Pakistan, but lots of other countries are trying to get influence in Afghanistan again: Russia, Iran, China, Turkey.

You are probably right bjd and Mark. Currently our Govt is making life very hard for refugees who served alongside our troops as guides, translators and other helpers. We were promised that these people would get A1 status and be entitled all the Oz schools, jobs etc. Now they are stalling and trying to send the refugees to other Pacific Islands....Bastards!
