The pictures coming out of Germany of the damage caused by the rain is a pointer to climate change. This has been going on for a while now, I well remember 'The Great Storm ' of October 1987 when we had violent wind which caused a lot of damage here. At work the next day, discussing this round the canteen table at lunch I was pontificating about how that was a sign of things to come caused by climate change, and getting pooh poohed.

What is really infuriating are all the politicians who could have signed on to meaningful legislation to at least slow climate change, but chose not to, preferring to cite scare statistics about job loss, etc. This of course is still going on. |

25 or so years ago I could feel the suns rays had taken on a more burning effect on my skin, stepping into the light from outside was like opening a very hot oven with that blast of overheated air. It was the destruction of the ozone layer, I found out, and the area over Oz and NZ were copping the worst of it.
I started to encourage everyone to use sunscreen, hats and shade and check for skin spots that could turn nasty. It took several more years for the Govt to run campaigns on the subject, and a few sad stories of young people dying of melanoma, to change the thinking about being in the sun.
"It is what we are doing to the planet that is causing this" I said in mid 90s.It was easier to help people to see the connection between Global Warming and droughts and fires, but the Great Barrier Reef, the extinction of plants and animals, destruction of homes and buildings, even that the warmer seas would cause more contact with sharks.
However year 2020 The penny dropped. After fires burned from August until February and thousands of people lost everything, the scientists agreed as a whole to work together to prevent and repair the damage I had been bleating about for so long.

Scientists have been "bleating" about climate change and the danger to the planet for decades now. When was the first Earth Day? 1971 or so? And more and more information comes up that scientists working for large fossil fuel companies were warning that burning oil and gas would lead to destruction, but their warnings were ingnored and sat on in favour of encouraging consumption, the car industry and general economic growth.
Every attempt to reverse the climate situation is attacked by various politicians saying they have to preserve jobs in the coal mining industry (in Poland), or yellow vest protestors fighting against a tax on gasoline consumption (France). In Canada, under the previous Conservative government, environmental scientists had to get government approval to present their work on climate change at international conferences. And look at the fuss in Canada over the US's stopping of the pipeline from the tar sands in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan into the States.
No matter how many scientists agree to work together, it is political change that is necessary to made a difference.
Right after I typed the above, I went to the Guardian's website and found this in an article:
"Many government leaders have promised to “build back better” from the pandemic but few countries are investing in the new infrastructure needed. Recent research by Vivid Economics found that only about a tenth of the $17tn being spent globally on rescuing stricken economies was going on projects that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions or restore nature.
However, more than $3tn was being poured into measures and industries that actively harmed the environment, such as coal and other fossil fuels."

I saw on Sky News that the Central African Republic is the #1 country in the world that is expected to suffer from climate change. (I don't really know what is expected to happen there except that obviously it will be hotter.) At the same time, it was pointed out that the Central African Republic is responsible for 0% of world carbon emissions. The world is not a fair place.
