Not only am I dying to see what you're having done, it's reassuring that you are not dying during the process, although I imagine you've wished to a time or two. If you lived where I live, you would understand my "oh my god it's palatially wonderful" reaction to your before pictures. Even so, I know you'll make it better.

it's reassuring that you are not dying during the process, although I imagine you've wished to a time or two. Survived but at times I felt so sorry for my builders during our recent heat wave .. but they assured me that actually it was a pleasure vs digging up a patio / laying a concrete base which they interspersed with the work here. As I mention them it reminds me that just the task of getting quotes and agreeing a price can be a tricky business. But I have no regrets ...I think I paid a fair price for their work , albeit some still to finish. Jamie and his young associate Tyler worked so hard and were an absolute pleasure to deal with. I felt safe having them ( and at times leaving them ) in my home ....how important is that ?

You’re very lucky to have found trustworthy workmen that you felt comfortable having around and leaving alone when you needed to go out. That’s so critical, as you know. Back years ago, when my children were babies and we were remodeling the kitchen, we all became very attached to the workmen. I was almost sorry to see them go once the job was finished.

I am very interested and excited to see the finished product Lugg!
It is a good feeling and relieving to trust your contractors. When we had contractors in to fix our basement due to a broken water pipe in the wall and then decided to have them renovate the bathroom down there as well, I became comfortable with having them around for weeks. The contractor that was there 95% of the time became aware of my health issues and at the end was checking in on me upstairs if he did not hear movement for a while, he was a kind person and a very skilled craftsman.

Some of the "past decorating disasters" look as though they were done by someone who actively hated the kitchen.
Your workmen sound so nice and, from the pictures, it appears they are also very careful.

The "ripping everything out" phase is the most traumatic, as you might have seen from my own renovation photos. Clearing out the plastic containers and throwing most of them away was liberating.

Glad to know that you have lived to tell the tale. I hope whoever buys your house doesn't decide to renovate the kitchen. I feel that if you are planning to sell, you should deal with the important stuff (like electricity which is never up to date in an old house) and leave the decoration for the new owners.
I can't say I like your old tiles and the fridge in the hall is a problem, but your old kitchen wasn't that bad. At least enjoy the new one for a while before you sell.

I can't say I like your old tiles Well unfortunately they are staying - I just could not justify the expense of taking them off and replacing them but I hope that they will meld in with the new kitchen cupboards / floor etc . They are being deep cleaned / re - grouted etc The "ripping everything out" phase is the most traumatic, as you might have seen from my own renovation photos. Clearing out the plastic containers and throwing most of them away was liberating. Yes... and I am going to take that same approach as I replace things in storage ie only going to put back what I need. Re all your comments re the contractors / builders - they are so key One of the things that my builders found was an absolute shambolic and dangerous mess re the electrics that were put in during my last kitchen up-date. In fact they found so many spurs on spurs ( I think that is the correct term? ) that one in particular had started to burn - could have been a real disaster. My photos don't really show all the mass of spaghetti wiring but I saw it and was shocked by it.

I agree with you, the corian worktops almost look brand new, and I really like your choice of tile for the back splash.

Oh, niiiiiiiice, Lugg! The new cabinets made a huge difference and, as Htmb said, make other things look new as well. I think the floor tiles are fine. Their true colors can be more clearly seen in the 4th photo of the OP and in the 1st photo of reply#4. In those pictures they're fully lighted with natural light. Once everything is finished and they get their re-grouting, they'll fit in well with everything else. I love all your modern choices for the faucet, lights, etc. What will you be doing over the stove -- put in the tiles to match the existing backsplash or a big sheet of stainless steel to match the sleek new sockets & switches?

That does indeed much better. It's interesting how even little things like modern plugs make such a difference. Good idea to keep the old counter -- it goes well with the new cupboards.

I think the floor tiles are fine I think you are being too kind Bixa - and also that we may be misunderstanding each other - the floor is going ( its the wall tiles that have to stay) - I loathe the floor with a passion and my children describe it as " styled with a theme of vomit" It was a huge mistake , I knew that as soon as it was laid way back when . As it was removed the old floor was uncovered and it was far better than what I chose to replace it. So here are the most up to date images I have. There is still work to be done, I am waiting for a door to fit over the fridge .... and so that whole unit with the microwave/ oven has to wait to be finally put in place. Also the splashback is yet to arrive - I am having a glass splashback made to order to fit the gap.

I think you are being too kind Bixa - and also that we may be misunderstanding each other - the floor is going Oh thank god!!! Yes, I was trying to put a positive spin on the floor since I thought you were stuck with it. The new one is beyond gorgeous -- great choice. And that is entirely sincere. Was that clock made by the same niece(?) who made you a picture using the same technique one Christmas? It looks great in the newly modernized setting, as does everything. I don't know when you're planning to sell, but your place should get snapped up.

Is that a laminate floor or tiles that look like laminate floor? Anyway, it does look so much better. You are going to regret selling your house now.

Looking good, Lugg! I love the addition of the splash back. It provides a nice focal point and makes your kitchen even more unique and special. It’s made of glass, right?
