Now 227.
Haiti seems to be a country permanently blighted by various situations.

If Nature can't wreck it, the politics will.

Maybe the United States can pour in some of that money they're saving from Afghanistan.

I wish we'd have poured in some of the money we are wasting on a pointless (and pandemic) federal election.

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/14/haiti-struck-by-earthquakeI wonder if any of the (ruined) Creole architecture is familiar to anyporters who live or have lived in NOLA?
Very much so here Lagatta. Our new home design is very much in the style of Caribbean homes often seen in Haiti. (the former house was a Craftsman style). All I can think of is how much these folks have suffered already and are barely recuperating from previous natural disasters.

I'm starting to think that pouring ever more money into Haiti doesn't seem to do any good. Just today I heard a radio interview with a guy from Doctors Without Borders. He said that lately they had been closing clinics because of the security situation -- armed gangs and general violence, especially in Port au Prince. Another country with extremes of wealth/corruption and poverty, with of course, much more of the latter.

Yes, for example, it is very different from Brazil, which has great income inequality (and many corrupt politicians) but also has a large middle class, as well as extremes of wealth and poverty. Most people in Haiti are poor or destitute.
There was an interview on Radio-Canada with a doctor working in Haiti; his father is from Haiti, his mother Québécoise by origin - who said that for the time being, the gangs were letting medical staff through without stealing from them.

Another country with extremes of wealth/corruption and poverty, with of course, much more of the latter. At least they don't have the poison of religious extremism! I remember all of the times when various imams in Iran have said that earthquakes in various places were a form of divine punishment. They never seem to say that where there is an earthquake in Iran.
