The only ones of that list I've seen are the duomo in Florence and Mt. Rushmore, which is fairly dealt with in the piece. They say the duomo isn't worth waiting in line to go inside, that the magic is the exterior, which makes me feel better as I've walked by the duomo dozens of times and never gone inside.

What I found interesting are the comments saying, "I was told not to bother going there but went anyway and was disappointed."
Some of these places were probably good to visit before they became completely overcrowded and overpriced, like Machu Pichu or the Sistine Chapel.

I am in agreement to a certain extent regarding the Pyramids and Taj Mahal.

I was at the pyramids so long ago that I actually climbed one of them with a colleague and an old Egyptian guide, illegally of course. I just about died. Most of you have no idea how big each of those blocks are up close. But the view from the top was unforgettable.

There are good views of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Good distance views of the Eiffel Tower, too. I’ve never been up either.

Khao San Road in Bangkok is one of my favourite places simply because it is so atrocious. I have stayed there for a day or two on more than half of my trips to Thailand (therefore more than a dozen times). It is a transit zone for all of the lost travellers of the world. I will absolutely not defend it to people who despise it, but I will not condemn it either. I consider it to be a far more facinating people watching place than any Parisian café terrace. And then after dark it suddenly turns into a hellish festival of fried bugs but wonderful pad thai, cheap cocktail vans and sleazy ladyboys looking for customers. All with Buddhist monks with their begging bowls walking down the middle of the street. I love it.

The church you want to see in Florence is Santa Croce: www.santacroceopera.it/en/I imagine that the Cinque Terre were lovely before the area got overtouristed. I don't think I've visited any of the other attractions. There is much more to see and do in the cities.

I have to agree about the Sydney Opera House. The writer misses one point in all these examples. The travellers go to these places not to "see" the place but to taste the atmosphere and immerse themselves in the goings-on in the environment. If they have expectations of a quiet, prayerful experience when visiting great holy places, of course they will be disappointed with the noisy rabble that usually surrounds them. If the tourists try out a few words in the local language they may have some better experiences than the obligatory photoshoot and quick search for a "souvenir" to remind them of the place.
At the Opera House there are many other things to see...The Rocks at the base of the Pylons of the Bridge is the landing place and beginnings of the settlement that became Sydney. It is very interesting and leads down to the Circular Quay where today all the dozens of ferries service the Harbour and upriver. You can get a ticket that gives you a ride taking in most of the stops in a circuit where you can hop off/hop on and visit Watson's Bay and The Gap as well as other sights all around the Harbour.
All the disappointed travellers quoted here just forgot to link their expectations with the reality of their destination. No problem...go to your chosen place then after "ticking it off the list" go and find something memorable to YOU about it. able

I have visited 12 our of the 29 listed. I do not regret having never seen the balance as I feel no attraction to them. My 12 are: Grand Canyon, Dead Sea, Bourbon str.New Orleans, Not been inside Duomo but took pics outside, Dublin, Sydney Opera House - not inside but did climb the bridge, Disney World X2, Cinque Terre - thought was horrible too, Oktoberfest - very expensive hotel time, San Francisco - too long ago, Versailles X 2 as once at night, Empire State- looking down on all that concrete - na.
