We have been following the news reports Lagatta as well. The latest update I have read is there are still 4 to come up but that everyone so far has been in good health. They report that they are stressing to make the climb at their own pace and that they are waiting near the top to bring them up the rest of the way.
The stairs/ladder system to climb out has been estimated at climbing the CN Tower twice.

The remaining 4 have have now been brought up the remaining way to the surface. They are reporting no injuries. Thankful all are now safe and are returning to their families. The mine shaft sustained extensive damage as a piece of equipment fell while being lowered down the shaft that was the size of a car. It will take some time to repair. It is a relatively new mine site.

What I find strange is that even though I had seen a small item on this story, it got almost no coverage here, while mine disasters in China or India or South America are regularly in the news. I guess that's because this wasn't a "disaster" but just an inconvenient accident with no dead people.

None of the Chilean miners a few years back died either. I was sure mich would be following the story not only because they are in northern Ontario (which is HUGE) but also because of Mr Mich's profession.
Yes, it was quite a climb!

I think because there was immediate contact with them since they all made it to a safe room and that they had access to the emergency ladder/stair exit. Thankfully all the right things happened, the miners knew where to get to, the communication systems worked, the teams mobilized quickly to get food, water and medications to them so they could prepare for the ascent. All the plans, drills and support enabled everyone to come up safely. The years of experience and planning worked in this case.
Many of my husbands cousins are miners in another northern Ontario city in the same area. Also, his Grandfather, uncle and cousins in France were miners.
It was wonderful to hear this morning all were safe and in good health.

Wonderful to hear all were brought out alive and well. So many of our mining disasters here in South Africa do not end well.
