After a hectic week, forgetting about who would take care of the dog and how we would go to the airport since the car was once again broken down, the family was on their way to Venice. Wake up at 3 50. Oldest came back from work at 4. At 4.20 we were in the car. Boarding passes were wrong : you must precise who is the kid, giving the age. We checked in Maroe without paying attentuon and i was the last to check in. So i checked in aged 11. To correct, we would have to pay 115 euros. We rehearsed saying 'ah, oh, that is what it was weird, well...'. Turned out nobody paid attention. Tgey checked Covid passes with ID to match and made us promise we would do the PLF before boarding. Passenger locator form. A bore, on a site devised by an alcoholic 7 years old geek. But we were finally on the plane. I fell asleep during take off.

First bridge, first view of a canal, ftom Piazzale da Roma.
First smiles of 'la smala' First church, we were rudely kicked out by some clerks : there is a mass going on'. So much for a christian welcome. I love these small alleys. Our first palaces. Italians are demonstrating against Covid pass. A huge demonstration. The gran canale i think. Some facades are repainted. Most are left crumbling.

Even in such a touristy city, you find small markets with great vegetables and fruits. Much more basilicum than in Belgium. Our first breakfast. I love getting lost 100 m from the main streets. Nobody at 120 m from main street... I could luve in such courtyards ! Under the protection of the Madonna of course.

The stars are on the loose. The sunglasses cost 10 euros. Sun was shining the whole stay. On our way to and from b&b to San Marco. Yep. This facade was NOT repainted. But what a charm. A canal... Pow wow on the bridge. Which way ? The Gran Canale.

The gondola ride... Venice and no gondola, really ? Gran canale again and again. The Rialto bridge with our oldest. The typical Rialto bridge picture. I am really in love with those buildings. One of the oldest churches, all in marble. I didn't like it inside Albeit waking up at 4, Marie liked it. The house of Marco Polo. I think. A smaller canal. So calm, so beautiful.

The view from 50 meters from the b&b, pier of Madonna dell Orto, on the north. I think it us cemetery island. Unfortunately we didn't stop there on the way back from Murano. Tired. Going into town. My girls. The same, interested in shopping. Did I say i love these buildings ? We were 5 min before closing time at the basilica. Among the last 10 to enter that day.

The Canale at night. We tried to go back by boat. Could not find how to pay... so we wslked. 25 000 steps first day. 15 000 second day. 15 000 last (half) day. Rhaaaaa. At the market. Buting fruits and spices. The fish market. Inside. Back to the canal. It was too short a week end

On the subject of shopping and food, we jad some good pastas, some meeh pizzas and a fantastic restaurant with medieval recipies. Of course we bought some glass artefacts, 2 masks, some jewelry and a silk tie with a tiger hand painted. We did our job as tourists 😉
It was a fantastic trip.

Pizzas are not at all a northern Italian dish. In fact, they did not appear in northern Italy before 1960. But people tend to think that Italy = pizza. The pizze sold in France or Belgium are almost certainly better because the pizzaioli in the restaurants are usually from Sicily.

My first pizza was in Venice about 1963. I thought it the most delicious thing I had ever eaten.

I've had decent pizza made by Tunisians in Paris. We were speaking Italian and they joined in, in Sicilian. Guess they learned the pizza craft on that neighbouring island.
Yes, pizza in Venice is usually overpriced cr*p, though by now I'm sure there are a few exceptions. Probably in Mestre...

Ohhhh, I wanna be there so bad! Whatagain, I devoured your wonderful pictures -- so many great angles and different views of the iconic sights. You all did a great deal in the short time you were there. Your beautiful family looks so happy, so it was obviously a worthwhile trip. I just love that you love the same things that I did -- the gently crumbling buildings, the tiny hidden streets, the endless canals, etc. The only negative note was the students. They should be thrown out of school since they're obviously too stupid to learn anything. I've had decent pizza made by Tunisians in Paris. We were speaking Italian and they joined in, in Sicilian. Guess they learned the pizza craft on that neighbouring island. LaGatta, if you'll dig around a little online, you'll find genealogy sites for families originally from Sicily in Tunisia. They probably brought their pizza with them.

What an enjoyable report! Lovely pics, lovely ladies! It doesn't appear that there were throngs of tourists. That and the absence of cruise ships makes it more inviting. Pity about the food being a disappointment.
Thank you for sharing this memorable trip with us.

Oh, we had a good, a correct meal and a wonderful one at le bistrot de Venise. Only the pizza was disappointing. Le bistrot was expensive but excellent. We learned the hard way that without recommendations, you can be lured into a tourist trap. And with a rec, it usually means pricey 😸

As I'll be in Italy next month this is making me seriously think about booking a few days in Venice, bur probably won't. I've got a lot to do and the weather is likely to be merda pura. If I could know it'd be mostly deserted I might change my mind however. Venice is definitely the worst food city I know in Italy—by a kilometer—but being Italy, it still isn't a complete desert. I didn't know one as a tourist could access the Bridge of Sighs, I was surprised to see that photo taken from inside it.

You did a great job on showing us the sights through your eyes. I always get excited seeing a photo of the same thing I photographed. Of all your photos I connected best with the one of the outdoor market and seeing those cellophane wrapped herbs in long tubes. I still have plenty un-used and I must warn you if you bought some - use them as mine are turning a strange colour after two years!

Bon giorno ! i was in Venice for work but had a few hours for me. A palace. Like bridges, too numéros to count. Lots of small streets and in some Romeo and Giulietta found a way to see each others … A panoramic sight from the north of the island, towards Mestre. Some palaces are not on the canals. This one is ! The Rialto. With 2 f my colleagues. The basilica. The campanile. Not much light, we are not in Vegas ! But there was more light here. Palace of the Doges. incredibly beautiful. The bridge of the sighs, nearly free of tourists. Some palace were turned into luxury shops. look at the ceiling ! Fabulous. From the bridge del Accademia.
