Go ahead, trot them out no matter how hokey, hackneyed or ho ho ho they might be!
I'll go first with a favorite of mine. Here are four New Orleanians with their renditions of Oh Holy Night ~
Irma Thomas
Mahalia Jackson
Aaron Neville
James Booker

Do I discern a lack of spirit of the season?
This is an exciting arrangement of God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen with Carol of the Bells ~

I'm not remotely fond of Christmas, but that was beautiful. Odd, I can't find any references to that violinist.

Do I discern a lack of spirit of the season? That last video is indeed quite good. May we surmise that "Christmas music" has now been added to "Christmas songs"?

Not a fan of Christmas music per say but, have to say that James Booker rendition of "Oh Holy Night" is a treasure. Leave it to you Bixa to come up with such a jewel. Thank you!

There's also this wonderful, over-the-top sentimental number, My mother's eyes.
He is playing an instrument rather different from a western violin.

Must say Xmas music or songs get awfully on my nerves and are a reason to flee some shops.
The worst for me is Charles Trenet (30's french artist) with 'petit Papa Noël'. Second worst is Georges Michael 'last Xmas'.
Nearly akin for me to dutch rap. 15 minutes of it and i confess having killed JFK.

I haven't clicked on any of these videos because I can't stand "Christmas music" as mentioned above: Petit Papa Noel is enough for me to scream, and having to go to the supermarket and listen to endless rounds of Jingle Bells... Arggh!
One of my nice childhood memories of Christmas is being at school in the days before Christmas holidays. It was a very big public elementary school in Toronto -- 8 grades with about 7 or 8 classes of 35 kids in each grade. Everyone stood outside the classroom in the hall and we sang carols like "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" and "O Come All Ye Faithful". Even the Jewish kids sang. We even sang Silent Night in German -- not knowing what any of the words meant, of course.

Oz has some nice songs for the season. If you want something fresh turn to ...
Carol of the Birds Written by: William Garnet James & John Wheeler
Out on the plains the brolgas are dancing Lifting their feet like war horses prancing Up to the sun the woodlarks go winging Faint in the dawn light echoes their singing Orana! Orana! Orana to Christmas Day
Down where the tree ferns grow by the river There where the waters sparkle and quiver Deep in the gullies bell-birds are chiming Softly and sweetly their lyric notes rhyming Orana! Orana! Orana to Christmas Day
Friar birds sip the nectar of flowers Currawongs chant in the wattle tree bowers In the blue ranges lorikeets calling Carols of bushbirds rising and falling Orana! Orana! Orana to Christmas Day
The word "Orana" means "Welcome"

But I bet they also still sing stupid songs about snow and sleighs in Australia's summery Christmas. I was there once as the season was beginning and remember seeing a big snow flocked tree in Melbourne.

Thank you so much for that, Questa! I feel stupid, but it never occurred to me that Australia might have its own Christmas songs. I'm putting a link to a sung version of the Carol of the Birds here, if that's okay with you ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKdFiTqx7kU <-- copy/paste

We even sang Silent Night in German The point of this thread is to elicit the good memories about Christmas music, to which we'll all be subjected during this season, like it or not. Yes, your comment about fleeing the supermarket reminded me that there is one Xmas song so horrible, so ubiquitous that it makes me dread December every year. I shan't name it here. And it's true that repeatedly hearing the old chestnuts is annoying, whether we like them or not. But some of those songs are lovely memories. I learned Silent Night (& O Tannenbaum) in German one year in grade school because we had a German student in the class. And Hark, The Herald Angels Sing takes me way, way back to when I was 4 or 5 and we lived in Alaska. I can remember sitting in the car with my brother and my mother waiting to pick up my dad from work. Mama would entertain us with stories and songs. We would request the "jelly toast" song ("With th’angelic host proclaim"). There is one song I can be sure to hear in the supermarket here in Mexico this time of year. Rather than making me want to flee it makes me grab for a tissue as it floods me with nostalgia for when I learned it in Madrid as a child ~

The UGC cinema chain in France used to start playing American Christmas music during the waiting periods staring December 1st. I just endured it since I am a kind soul, but I think enough people must have complained because they stopped doing it after three years. It was the most horrible shopping mall music imaginable and even more so because it had nothing to do with Christmas in Europe. I would have gladly taken the UGC person who had decided to do this and shot him plunged his head into a dirty toilet.
Your last song is lovely, Bixa, but probably only because I have not heard it 5000 times.

I was at the mall shopping the other day and I can not even tell you if there was music playing or not but there must have been.

Tim Minchin...Oz muso, satirist and observer of life sings this. Wish I could find the lyrics 'cos he is unclear sometimes. ABC had a competition for favourite Xmas song and this had more than 12 times the next song

I have lots of memories about Christmas music - my Dad always played a few favourites for us on Christmas Morning - many caused some ( many ) groans. Some were very traditional carols, some wacky and others not so much. He was a huge fan of Kate Bush and so this one holds special memories, even though we were no longer children ( 19 and 17 )... I think when my sister and I were home for the Christmas the year this was released. He played it for many years and so we heard it whenever we returned home at Christmas with our children. Now, years later, I think, and hope, it was a message from him to us.The reason I hope it is, is because my Mum's funeral was on Xmas Eve and certainly my sis and I struggled to find the magic of Christmas for several years.

This is not technically a Christmas song, but considering the BVM's place in the Christmas story, I think it's appropriate. This version is also a lovely and amazing feat ~
