I need a place like something good happened today but for things that didn't happen to me.
Just things that we find positive and want to share. If there is such a thread just move it there please mods.

The positive news of the day follows a post I saw on linkedIn about a mother being desperate and hoping, via LinkedIn to find a job for her son who graduated in hotel studies and who has Darwin syndrom.
The ones we call in French trisomiques, having 3 chromosomes.
So the boy got a job in a restaurant close to Le Mans, France. The restaurant owner said he was so impressed by the boy, his good will and hard work that he immediately hired him.
Some good people still exist on earth.
I will try to eat yhere, should i find myself in the neighbourhood.

I moved this thread because I didn't think it was subject to debate (port & starboard). Obviously the news about the young man from Le Mans was on the news in France (in fact, I saw the report too many times: on France 2, France 3, Franceinfo...) While it is great information, it can hardly be considered "news" these days at least in France with the various Café Joyeux places -- 3 in Paris and one each in Bordeaux, Rennes and now even Lisbon. Their employees have Down Syndrome (not Darwin) and similar handicaps. The city of Paris even got them reduced rent on the Champs Elysées! Each place also has a couple of non-disabled staff to help them when necessary. www.cafejoyeux.com/fr/ (the site is also in English and Portuguese)

Here is the capsule presentation:
I hope that other countries have this, too.

I know of no such places in Belgium.
I was once in a restaurant in China where all the waitresses were deaf or mute.

In a FNAC store once, one of the cashiers had a sign saying "I am deaf so if you need to speak to me, please face me directly so that I can read your lips."

Today's midday news opened with the nice story of two little girls in Tourcoing (which happens to hold the title of poorest city in France), cousins age 10 and 11, who collected 700 pairs of (new) socks to give to the homeless. I'm sure that a lot of them appreciated it more than a package of biscuits, especially right now.

Restaurant owners and staff in my neighbourhood also hold a sock drive. Of course people also donate money. Homeless people go through a lot of socks and often develop serious foot problems if they wear damp ones and nowhere to keep them clean and dry.

Indeed Lagatta. My drill sergeant said that our feet were our best asset. We had 3 pairs of socks issued by the army. One in use, one being washed, drying, one clean - at all times. I always have clean socks in my backpack, just in case.

Positive news : engineers invented glasses - spectacles - that allow mute paraplegic to communicate, by using the eyelids.
I didn't get it all but it seems to be working to some extent.

That is 'positively' amazing!
One of our best friends became a quadriplegic at the age of 34 due to his Audi breaking some part which flipped his car 7 times. The other two passengers got out alive but he was crippled from the neck down. BUT, he was an amazing man. Taught himself to write left-handed, taught himself to manipulate his muscles in his shoulders so he could feed himself and went on to become our deputy Attorney General. Sadly he died from complications two years ago at an age of 72 and is greatly missed by us all. If anyone could have been negative in life it was him but he did the exact opposite. He was a huge inspiration to other attorneys training to sit in The High Court as Advocates.

I'm still waiting for news of the the 5 year old Moroccan boy who fell down the well. It's been 3 days now, and the whole country is watching as they try to dig him out. What is it with small children and wells?

Only heard about this now. So so tragic. Poor little creature. I feel for his family.

The only positive aspect of that tragic story is the fact that people not only in Morocco and the Maghreb but throughout the world cared about the boy and the story and extended condolences to his family.

Granddaughter and her partner are engaged. Mike chose a ring made with 'ethically sourced precious stones' it has an uncut emerald in the centre and small uncut diamonds either side. My engagement ring has an emerald in the centre flanked by small diamonds..mine are cut tho. Not my birthstone (or Victoria's) but we both ended up with emeralds..Coincidence. but it mde us all raise our eyebrows. Don't think Mike knew about my engagement ring. Super excited.

Cheery, my engagement ring was also an emerald, although I chose it, not my husband. Actually, I never wear it because the top little stones kept catching on things. I haven't seen it in years -- probably in a box somewhere. Occasionally, my husband says, "You never wear your engagement ring." We weren't in fact really engaged -- we just decided to get married and dealt with the paperwork and got married within a couple of months. But that was in the late 1970s -- big weddings were not very fashionable in those days.

Actually, I never wear it because the top little stones kept catching on things. I haven't seen it in years -- probably in a box somewhere I;m in a similar situation except my solitaire diamond sits proud of the gold band and only has 4 claws - this means it has to be insured and inspected for frailty every year. That's OK but what is not is OK is the chance it could be ripped from my finger by a thief. He would be carrying a sharp knife.....you guessed it. If my ring was ever to be stolen it would drive me nuts not knowing where it is. At least I know its in our safe. I don't have to look at it as I designed it, selected the diamond, and know every aspect of it.

Before we went to Colombia, I was told not to wear any jewellery or carry valuables. Not that I wear much jewellery anyway, but I even left the gold chain I wear around my neck at home. In Colombia, I saw loads of women with earrings, bracelets and all kinds of flashy stuff so I asked my daughter-in-law's mother why I had been warned. She said they all wore fake stuff.
There should be a word in English or French for consuegro/a -- the parent of your son- or daughter-in-law.

Great news !
My wife still wears her engagement ring. I was smart enough to choose it with her, si she likes it.
My preferred trick wss to go with her and she usually would hesitate between 2 jewels and buy one. Then i would go back alone and buy the other one...

I think in English they decided that "step" and "in-law" would do for anyone a step away from real blood relations. A step parent in law?

Positive news :
In UK (an avant-garde country) a nuclear fusion could be sustained for 5 secs, a record.
Tbe reaction didn't stop by itself but would have destroyed the equipment. One major step towards clean and abundant energy ?
(Even if we hear that every 5 years when it comes to nuckear fusion...).
