Noyon is in the neighbourhood of Compiègne. I usually sleep in Compiègne self (l'atelier du 14 is a greag leat restaurant and the Shamrock a nice café playing hzrd rock of yhec80's with belgian beer) or closecto Pierrefonds.
Some weeks ago however i selected Noyon. And old northern France big town or small city. K zrrived in the earlyvevening and left early so all pics are dark, but i intend to go back in better weather.
The cathedral of XII is splendid and faces a square where the houses of the monks date from end XVII.
Noyon has a not so good reputation, but, being a man in its prime and fearing nothing, i didn't notice anything and felt perfectly at ease.

The cathedral, shining its glory. The house of a 'chanoine'. Ok, I'll dig to understand the difference between chanoine, monk, priest. In any case a religious guy who could sleep very comfortably. There was clearly money at some time. End of XVIII ? threading ? Coal ? The houses facing the cathedral. Bullets ? Also, no statues are visible. Revolution ,? Ruins of older parts of the cathedral on the left. Bourgeois houses, now shops or banks at street level. My car is looking nice there. I ate in front if it. The hôtel de ville. City hall.

My hotel. Pompously called château. I'd say manor. The annexes are more like annexes of a true castle. The moat My room. The 'commode'. Louis something style. I'd bet on Louis Philippe, but i have zero expertise. I like it though. The church nearby. Not so recent... In these areas, the licals' idols are not necessarily great guys...

I find the little "danger de mort" sign apt.

I have always found it appropriate how France has generally left the pockmarks from shelling and artillery on its main public buildings. It gives a stronger reminder to everyone of what happened in the past than a few pages in a history book.

It is wonderful that you take the time to take pictures and make reports during your business trips, Whatagain. And it's very bold of you to take those nighttime pictures, which are the hardest kind. Your hotel, pompously named or not, has beautiful grounds. I'd question the use of that throw rug in your room, though. The cathedral is indeed very grand & huge. I looked up chanoine and found that it is canon in English. Good old Wikipeda says: Originally, a canon was a cleric living with others in a clergy house or, later, in one of the houses within the precinct of or close to a cathedral or other major church and conducting his life according to the customary discipline or rules of the church.Good one, Bjd!

Your photos are much appreciated Whatagain - simply because the chances of ever going to Noyon are very slim but from your photos I get an idea of the little town.

The majesty of the cathedrals in some relatively small towns (Noyon = 13,190) is always amazing. However, Charlemagne and Hugues Capet were both crowned there, and that definitely counts for something.
