Stop the presses! I just came across this recipe and it rocked me back on my heels. The only reason I'm typing this instead of cooking up this orgasmic-sounding delight is because I don't have most of the ingredients. Seriously, this could make a person leave macaroni & cheese or lasagna by the wayside. I'm posting the link instead of just the recipe because I think everyone will want to wallow in the last picture. Um ....... feel free to post any other recipes for items you think belong in the ultimate comfort food pantheon. Savory Bread Pudding

I don't see the need for broccoli in the ingredients.

I was on the fence about that, too, but then I realized that the broccoli probably gives the concoction some "loft" -- either that, or it provides a little touch of sweetness. However, it seems that the mushrooms would serve the same purpose.
Wonder what the addition of some walnuts sauteed in butter would do to the pudding?

I don't see the reason for broccoli being an ingredient in anything, ever.

I love the recipe. It's a savoury version of a pudding that GoldenO served up to me called Om Ali.
ok I know that Om Ali is made from pastry...but it's similar.

I agree about the broccoli. Walnuts or some other nut ,maybe pistachios sounds interesting. Water chesnuts?

From what the author says about her recipe, I believe she was going for a quiche-type reference. We've all nixed broccoli. What about spinach or chard?

Spinach might be good.

Yes, broccoli is very nice, but it must be cured of its habit of getting cold before it reaches your mouth.

I don't mind eating it cold or even raw.

Hmmm ~~ speaking of bread "pudding" and speaking of oysters:
Baked Oyster Dressing
* 2 teaspoons unsalted butter * 1 pint shucked oysters and their liquor * 2 tablespoons vegetable oil * 2 cups chopped yellow onions * 1 cup chopped green bell peppers * 1 cup chopped celery * 1 1/2 teaspoons salt * 1/2 teaspoon cayenne * 3 bay leaves * 1 tablespoon minced garlic * 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley * 1 cup water * 1/4 cup chopped green onions * 4 cups 1-inch cubes French bread or homemade-style white bread * 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Butter a 9 by 11-inch baking pan with the butter and set aside.
Drain the oysters, reserving the oyster liquor. Set aside.
Heat the oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, bell peppers, celery, salt, and cayenne and saute for 5 minutes, or until soft. Add the bay leaves, garlic, and parsley, and saute for 1 minute. Add the water and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the green onions, oyster liquor, and the bread cubes. Stir to mix well, and remove from the heat.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread and vegetable mixture with the oysters and cheese. Stir with a wooden spoon to mix thoroughly. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan and bake for 1 hour, or until bubbly and golden brown.
Remove the bay leaves before serving
I would not put the bay leaves in at all. Above from "Louisiana Real and Rustic", by Emeril Lagasse and Marcelle Bienvenu, William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1996

Thanks Bixa.
Yes, I love oysters but not the size of slippers (as served by dear Baz)...

I didn't read the recipe, but from the snippets in the replies, this DOES NOT sound like comfort food to me. Bread? Broccoli? Give me some mashed potatoes and sourcream gravy.

Funny, the moment I saw the term 'comfort food' at the beginning, my very first thought was 'mashed potatoes' even though that was not one of the most common dishes of my youth. Normally, I should have thought 'french fries' or something like that.

Macaroni and cheese was not part of my childhood. Stuffed crabs certainly were, but they are not common enough to readily comfort me.

In the US today, many kids eat Mac and Cheese several times a week. (The dried-pasta-in-a-box-with-a-silver-envelope-of- powdered-"cheese" variety, not the gourmet home-made versions.)
