In spite of air conditioned stadiums, Qatar wisely scheduled the World Cup for 21 November-18 December when the temperatures should be less extreme.
The United States has just managed to qualify. It's always interesting to see how long they will last in the #1 sport in the world.

Of course Qatar is a totally unsatisfactory venue but plenty of money has changed hands.

I think it has almost always been about money. The biggest challenger to Qatar for the designation of the venue was the United States, and it is even less of a football country than Qatar.

It’s always about money but at least US weather would be more reasonable.

Preparation for the World Cup is getting really intense.

And now it has started. Many people who said that they would not follow the matches are suddenly changing their minds.
After all, nobody refused to watch the World Cup in Putin's Russia, which was already not such a nice place 4 years ago.

I've watched a bit. Les bleus have demonstrated the only authentic soccer magic I've seen so far.

The Mannschaft did not impress against Spain tonight... but they saved their skin for the moment.

The World Cup always has a few ugly sides, so yesterday there were riots across Belgium (Brussels, Liège, Antwerp) after the Belgium-Morocco match.

Well, the United States beat Iran tonight. I suppose that that will relieve quite a few people.

Well, the United States beat Iran tonight. I suppose that that will relieve quite a few people. Except for the people from Iran who cheered for the US and also some of the Iranian team who have been singled out for "treason" and face who knows what kind of retribution. I'm sure that every single Iranian who didn't demonstrate allegiance to Iran and were most assuredly under surveillance have already been rounded up and I don't even want to imagine what happened to them. BRAVO to the Brits!!!

Our supermarket is flooded with soccer balls for sale - Your purchases get reward stickers which when reaching 10 entitle one to pay half price for a ball. I have two balls for the two scallywags!

France, Croatia, Argentina and Morocco in semi finals.

Yes, the other countries can rest. It is relief to me that France and Morocco cannot meet each other in the final but only in the semifinal. The police are sure to be on high alert everywhere in France on Wednesday. Although the vast majority of Moroccans in France have assimilated very well in the country and are super nice, they form the largest immigrant group and number more than 1,300,000 counting the first and second generation so it wouldn't be good if any sort of injustice got them upset, even a small minority of them.

There is a certain satisfaction to winning when you know that almost every country in the world wants you to lose, if only because the other country is adorable.
At least France and Morocco actually like each other and most Moroccans will now support France for the final.

Argentina is going through very hard economic times with 90% inflation, so it very much needs some cheer. And football is a religion in that country, which is not really the case in France.

Watching some of the reports of the celebrations in Argentina, I am a bit distressed by all of the people saying that this victory helps them to forget the economic problems and the inflation. I would be happier if they said that it gave them the strength to try to fix their country.

Yes, I was thinking about that too when I heard on the news that 40% of the population lives below the poverty line and that inflation is so high. A case study in how not to run a country -- after all, Argentina was a wealthy country that attracted immigration from all over the world at one time.
