British theatre legend Peter Brook died in Paris yesterday, age 97. He staged operas at Covent Garden and King Lear and other plays with the Royal Shakespeare company. He also directed the American television production of King Lear starring Orson Welles.
He moved to Paris in 1970 where he developed his main theatrical innovation -- working on a bare stage to stimulate the imagination of the spectators. I went to see his first production in Paris, Shakespeare's rarely staged Timon of Athens at the theatre at the end of my street, which has become one of the most important theatres in France. It remained "his" theatre as long as he was still working, but of course now it is used for all sorts of productions, still with a bare stage. I was there earlier this year, wearing my mask.

Oh Wow...that hurts. Some years ago Adelaide' world festival featured Brook's version of the Hindu classic , The Mahabharata. He started preparations years before the event choosing an old quarry as his stage. The play ran for six to seven hours and in the 3 intervals Indian food was served. The main characters came out to here to help teach the local actors about the history and Brook's incredible interpretation of the Epic.
He enjoyed living here and we loved his presence. Good bye, great story teller.
