The existing categories (US of Pres Trump and The Biden Admin, or Roe v Wade or Gun Control) no longer seem adequate to fully discuss what is going on in the United States. So it is perhaps time to go into general discussion of what is on the minds of politicians.
Matt Gaetz (congressional representative from Florida) made quite a splash with this speech.

I'd be happy to tell that bastard I'm pro-abortion, though that isn't actually factual. The point is that it's our choice (though some of those so-called "pro-life" nutters would force even women with ectopic pregnancies to carry out the pregnancy: meaning a dead mother and a dead foetus...)
Moreover, he should look in a mirror before he crticises other people's looks.

It's nice to see more Republicans interested in the theatre.
More seriously, I was going to post what appears to be some good news about the Senate approving the health care and climate bill, but now you have depressed me.

When I first moved to Mexico, someone explained to me that no matter which party was in power here, nothing would really get done because a rival party(s) would block it. Ooo, gee whiz. I'm so glad that doesn't happen in my home country. Here is the overview of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 which passed today, along with all the ways the shitweasels tried to scuttle it ~ heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/august-7-2022

Looks like Liz Cheney can take a rest. I'm not sure if it would be very useful for her to campaign for other candidates in November.

Why do things like the retirement of Dr Anthony Fauci suddenly become political? Dammit, he is already 81 years old. Shouldn't he have retired long before now? The fact that he served so long is what should be the subject of a debate.

I think the time has come to start talking about American political doings without constantly referring to either Trump or Biden.
Most politics in the United States are local, just like in other countries, and are not decided by the politicians at the top. With major elections coming up in just two weeks, there will certainly be local matters to discuss.

Yes, but local politics concern the locals. As a non-American, I am neither aware of nor interested in local US politics, just in what has international effects.

Oh, there are quite a few celebrities like the governors of Florida and Texas. And things like abortion or capital punishment do not affect people in other countries, but they are highly worthy of comment.

Well, one thing worthy of comment that I saw today is that the USA is one of the few countries whose life expectancy has not rebounded after the covid crisis, along with Bulgaria. In the latter, they think that it's due to unwillingness to be vaccinated, so a high death rate in 2020/21. The USA's problem lies in its health service and lack of universal coverage, and also the high death rates of drug overdoses. The US lost 2 years, the UK one. From an article in The conversation but it doesn't seem to appear in the UK or USA versions.

But to address the second paragraph, with its phrase "local matters" and Bjd's comment: As a non-American, I am neither aware of nor interested in local US politics, just in what has international effects. ----- I think the word "local" is somewhat misleading, and hope you don't mind my proposing something on the order of: "As in all republics, the delegates to the national government are supposedly representative of the attitudes and desires of their districts. Whether this is strictly true or not, it does give an insight into political trends throughout the country." Countries do pay attention to what would seem to be the interior politics of their allies and their enemies, as they want to know which way the wind is blowing.

I don't know if this will work unless you have Google set for the US, but just type the words "candidate threatened" and sit back to be appalled.

With only a week remaining until Election Day the media is spinning away in all different directions. I will be so glad when it is over. Sheer, utter madness on both sides of the aisle and no letting up it seems. And we know all too well that it will continue past the actual day with allegations and goodness knows what ad nauseum.

I had ordered a mail-in ballot, but decided to turn it in and vote in person today. We are at the end of two weeks of early voting, at three different county locations. The facility I visited was packed with people, and seemed to run very efficiently.

Hogs the headlines, hogs the courts, hogs the rallies of his minions, hogs the hearts of the frightened and ignorant, etc. In short, he does what hogs do -- root, hog, or die.
