Because it's Trump, it's disgusting, but it would be naive to be outraged by this and not the fact that almost all of the super rich pay very little in taxes because they created the tax system themselves with a little help from their friends.

No, no ~ It's not bad, but good, as The Proudly Successful Business man spells out:
[the returns] show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises.”

Yeah, all those "magnificent structures" with TRUMP in big shiny letters on them.

I haven't been paying too much attention, but it would appear that this deal about electing a Speaker of the House is getting a bit ridiculous.
The main thing I don't understand is why the newly elected congresspeople can't be confirmed in office until this problem is solved. It's not as though the new Speaker had any role in their election.

Until a Speaker is elected… "Technically, the House doesn’t even exist. It is not a continuous body, which means that every two years it must reconstitute itself. Even re-elected lawmakers are not technically members of the House until they are sworn in." Source

Yes, I understand that, but WHY? The Speaker is just one member of Congress. Why has so much power been given to the person? What purpose does it serve?

Also, if the new members of Congress can't be sworn in, does this mean that it is the lame duck Congress that is voting on the Speaker? If so, the lame ducks had a Democratic majority, so wy can't they vote in a Democrat? And if it is the new Congress voting for a Speaker, how can they possibly do so if they have not yet taken office? Who is in charge? And the taxpayers are financing all this crap? If every member of Congress was charged $1000 a day as long at no Speaker is elected, I think they would elect one really fast.

As I understand it, the role of the Speaker is to not only serve as the voice, but is chosen for his/her ability to corral votes, to push programs, etc. through. I suppose the Speaker also serves to keep the other members in order, to remind them of the reason why they're there, etc. Obviously, I am describing an ideal and your question about why so much power is legitimate. Here is what wikipedia has to say: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speaker_of_the_United_States_House_of_Representatives

We were simul-posting ~ "At the first session of Congress after every general election of Representatives, the oath of office shall be administered by any Member of the House of Representatives to the Speaker; and by the Speaker to all the Members and Delegates present, and to the Clerk, previous to entering on any other business," the law reads.source

It’s the new Congress voting and there are about 20 super radical right wingers who have been controlling the vote. They’ve run several opposing candidates that have prevented McCarthy from earning a majority. Meanwhile, the ass McCarthy is giving into their demands and promising them all kinds of controls if they’ll just vote him into power as Speaker.

Much as I am enjoying watching the rabid hydra that is the Republican party turn on itself, this is really scary business. Yes, the hateful, venal, soulless shits are reaping what they sowed, but the rest of us will wind up suffering.

Yes, I'm sure that every parliament in the world has a head honcho to do that stuff. In France it is Yaël Braun-Pivet, the first woman to hold this position here (so Nancy Pelosi was a precursor).
Okay, that is clear, but if they are supposed be sworn in, how did they get this power beforehand? I read that one of them was planning to be sworn in on a Superman comic book.

Aren't they supposed to dismantle most of what the Democratic Congress did?
Let's get back to George Santos.

That really depresses me. Makes me realize how close we Europeans were to have remained under nazi rules for 100 years.
Took the US more than 2 years to declare war on Hitler. Now it could take 5 min to drop Ukraine.

I don't understand how the United States can dare to support the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against Vladimir Putin. The United States is not one of the 123 member states and does not want to abide by its decisions, so shouldn't it STFU?

Agreed. The US not recognizing the ICC to protect pieces of shit like Kissinger, GWB, and Cheney means we need to keep our ugly traps shut when it comes to that court.
