I am just opening this space since even though most of us don't know enough about Italian politics to have valid opinions, when has that ever stopped us from having opinions? New Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has already proven that she has some "interesting" ideas about what her country should do. Her inaugural address today indicated that she has watered down quite a few of her ideas, at least in public, and may not be as scary as a lot of the first reports claimed. Key moments from Italian PM Meloni's maiden speech
(In terms of semantics at Reuters, I am wondering if the speech by a male PM would have been called a "maiden speech.") It should probably be mentioned that French president Emmanuel Macron was the first European head of state to meet with her, but he was basically trapped into doing this. He was attending a long scheduled peace conference organised by the Pope, the date of which had been set before the Italian elections. Naturally, this gave opponents a double reason to criticize him, first for secular France to attend a "religious" event and secondly for fraternising with a far right wing government. Sometimes you can't win.

Rome CNN — Italians who use English and other foreign words in official communications could face fines of up to €100,000 ($108,705) under new legislation introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party.
Fabio Rampelli, a member of the lower chamber of deputies, introduced the legislation, which is supported by the prime minister. Source

We went through a phase like that in France about 30 years ago but without the huge fines. Nothing happened in the end.

I don't know anybody who says "courriel" for an e-mail. Only "mails", which I have seen written "mél".

I just watched four minutes of Berlusconi’s funeral. That was enough for me. Is it common practice in Italy to applaud as the deceased’s casket is being processed into the church?

It's done quite a bit in Europe for major public figures which you greatly admire.

The first time I witnessed it, I was disconcerted. But then I realized it was no stranger than anything else that's part of a funeral. Before I go, I need to hire someone to come to my funeral in order to throw him/herself across the coffin while shrieking, "Take me instead! Clothes rending wouldn't go amiss, either.

I saw only a short clip on the news and was surprised by the applause too. I can't say anyone looked particularly heartbroken in the front row and I liked the touch of the archbishop of Milan making a speech in praise of Signore Bunga Bunga.

As we all know, Giorgia Meloni promised to stamp out illegal immigration. It's one of the reasons that she was elected. It's therefore quite interesting that the number of migrants in Italy doubled in 2023 over the previous year. Giorgia Meloni Gets a Reality Check
