For many years Galeries Lafayette was considered to be the most dynamic department store of boulevard Haussmann and it even reached the point where foreign visitors to Paris often visit the city and only visit Galeries Lafayette without setting foot in Printemps. When I was growing up as "small town French" I knew you have to visit both places when you come to Paris because they have a different atmosphere and frankly Printemps was always just a bit easier to afford. Now I consider both of them to be out of reach except during the sales periods (and even then...), but my visit the other day reminded me how much more appealing Printemps is, principally because it is not overrun by foreign tourists even though there is of course no lack of them. And this time I found it more elegant than its neighbour, not as bling-flashy, and if I had not been on a mission, I actually would hae wanted to investigate some of the things being sold.
But as you all know, at this time of year my mission is just to take a look at the Christmas windows. This year, they chose a theme that is both traditional and trite but sure to please the children in any case, and isn't that the whole point of this? And so the windows celebrated the circus.
