The Oxford dictionary word of the year for 2022 is "goblin mode"
One of the weirdest choices I have ever seen.
Merriam Webster chose" "gaslighting" which is more sensible to me although it's as if this word has been not used regularly by many of a certain age. It's new to the younger generation and apparently emerged as a popular new word and was embraced by them enthusiastically.

Goblin mode is two words, I pedantically point out. Gaslighting originated from a 1944 film of a 1938 play, which is a curiosity that 'the young folk of today' mostly use it. But probably have no idea where it came from.

Yes Mark, that was my point about "gaslighting". Aside from "goblin mode" being 2 words, the choice is absurd. I had never heard of it and had to explore further as to what the heck it meant and why the F was it chosen? (And, ahem! It was chosen by all you Brits. 93% percent of those who participated in the choice so ) One of the reasonings I read was it refers to "the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the last 12 months" The 2 other contenders were "metaverse" and the hashtag "IStandWith".

The French went for words like visio, eco-anxiety and transidentity.

When I google "visio" all that pops up is a Microsoft application.
"eco-anxiety" is kind of a silly phrase but I get it.
"Trans identity", I'll get back to y'all on that one.
(Just for fun maybe we could adopt our own choice for word of the year on APIAS)

I love goblin mode! It describes me, my choice of food, clothes and behaviour on "off days" with my parkinson meds. ...Get outta my face or I'll set my goblins onto you.
