Interesting -- I always thought they were green.

There’s a free phone app called "aurora watch UK" for those who want to receive notices of possible upcoming displays.

Interesting -- I always thought they were green. I'm pretty sure they can be many colors, I've seen white, green, and pink/magenta. A friend posted some photos he took in Sweden last night and it was impressive. He knew nothing about them, was just taking the dog out to pee before he went to bed and noticed them. We had sightings even down here at 49N, although it was only clear enough on the dry side of the Cascade Range to see them, as one might expect.

I was given a lesson at breakfast this morning. The colours depend on which atoms in the air are hit by the magnetic field. Also that the reason for these spectacular aurorae is heavy sunspot activity.
