Otherwise known by its full Sunday name of El Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de la Cartuja and is one of those places overshadowed by somewhere a lot more famous, i.e. The Alhambra. I’ve been here before but some years ago on one of our first visits to the area but decided another one was in order as relatively it is just down the road from us (1 1/4 hours). It is a Carthusian Monastery that was started to be built in 1506, but as these things are, time seemed to get out of hand and it took another 300 years until it was finished. Possibly they took the idea of siestas a bit far. The style is Spanish Baroque but.... “the interior of the monastery's is a flamboyant explosion of ornamentation. Its complex echoing geometric surfaces make of it one of the masterpieces of Churrigueresque style.” I hope you’ll see what is meant by that in a minute. Externally it is quite plain and unornamented, the façade being from the 18th Century - The Cloister is 17th Century, around which are the communal rooms - The Refectory is quite simple - But had a series of ‘interesting’ paintings - The following three were mentioned as Monks from England and the method of them being killed (and then Martyred). By whom and why was not made clear but it is something I need to look further into when I’ve a bit of time. They look quite calm about it. Somewhat Monty Pythonesque -

I like the cloister but am not a fan of that overly ornate style on the inside.

Don’t think for one minute though you’ve finished with the over the top decorations - A couple of extra paintings for you to ponder the meaning of (out of the scores on display). This one I don’t have a clue - But this one is the Shroud of Turin? - If ever in Granada and stuck for couple of hours after viewing the other major sites, this is definitely a worthwhile visit to make to overwhelm the senses and a cheap thrill too, just 6 Euros entrance. For professional and a lot better photos, have a look at the official website - cartujadegranada.com/The Churrigueresque style explained - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churrigueresque

I like the cloister but am not a fan of that overly ornate style on the inside. Considering you posted in the minute or less between my posts it is quite clear you skipped past the ornate ones.

Yes, I realized that when I scrolled on. I was overwhelmed.

Very cool! Makes even the drippiest interiors from Bixa's Palermo report seem a bit spare and severe.

This is a remarkable and fascinating report full of information and great pictures -- I love it! I've only gone through it once so far, but have lots to say. Unfortunately, due to having worked like a mule today, I'm dying of sleepiness & must crawl into bed, even though it's not even 9:40 here. Tomorrow, yes -- I'll blitz this report! In the meantime ~ But this one is the Shroud of Turin - Nope. It's depicting a different sacred relic ~ philamuseum.org/collection/object/101900#:~:text=According%20to%20legend%2C%20Veronica%20wiped,veil%20is%20preserved%20in%20St. Gratuitous augmentation: Fun fact: the bullfight maneuver called a veronica is named after this statue. sourcehttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48124872258_aa6d238a4b_b.jpg <-- copy & paste

Very nice (if excessive) ornamentation. I wonder what all of the Latin cultures would have done with their skills if they hadn't been obsessed with religion for a thousand years.

My theory is the sum of obsessions, like addictions, always add up to the same. So if they weren't obsessed with this, they'd be obsessed with something else. No idea what though.

Amazing photos Mark. You don't have to be religious to appreciate the extremely intricate work that decorates the ceiling and walls.

I appreciate the craftsmanship for sure. That's about it. I'm sure if there is a god he/she would be thinking why on earth do you have to go to such trouble when it doesn't give you preferential treatment. How about using your time and money to alleviate tangible problems.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) is worth it seems about $265 Billion. I'm sure I could find a better use for the money. Even if it included a boat and motorbike for me.
