Still waiting to see if France gets the "wooden spoon" in the last match.

Well, France did indeed come in last, but no wooden spoon!

Ah, the 6 Nations tournament has finally started again. At least one thing is (nearly) certain -- the French team will fare better than they did last year.

France 26 - England 24
Those teams are going to need a good detergent for their uniforms.

I had just started looking at the forum and saw your post, Kerouac. I saw the last 10 minutes of the game -- it's the only sport I will watch. Glad the French won.

Well-fought match at the Stade de France. At least England put up a good fight, unlike their cricket counterparts, currently 11-1 down in Australia with one T20 game to play at the Olympic Stadium, Sydney tomorrow.

Rugby is an amazingly interesting sport since, contrary to just about all of the other team sports, the action just keeps going and going no matter how many times they drop the ball.

Well, France squeaked past Scotland in the first round, which isn't saying much.

I watched some of it and indeed, the Scots played better but the French got more penalty shots. As I watched, I thought how massive the players have become since they went professional in the 1990s. Looking at photos from before, they looked normal -- now they are huge. I also wondered how well American football players would do against a rugby team if they had no protections except for the occasional mouthpiece. They would fall apart at the first scrum.

Ignoring the size of the players, I wonder how many of the American football players could play non-stop for two 40 minute periods without all of the constant timeouts and commercial breaks.

You mean they stop during TV commercials?

Post by Deleted on Feb 8, 2015 16:35:22 GMT
Of course. They even stopped the Olympics in Atlanta and Los Angeles whenever there was a commercial.

In the majority of situations, the commercials are shown when there is a time-out or change of play on the field, not the other way around.

Thank god for small favours, but there are plenty of interruptions -- or extended times out -- due to the commercials in progress. I know how the US keeps trying to change the rules for football (soccer) to conform to the American sports. Of course, they don't really care about rugby because it will never be popular there. When the Football World Cup was held in the United States, it was a total nightmare because there were times when it seemed as though every goal was scored during a commercial interruption.

Interesting. Here in the US, every soccer game I've ever watched, including the last WC, has been broadcast with no commercial interruptions at all during play. They probably learned their lesson after the inadmissible faux-pas during the 1994 World Cup. Edit: I just checked and actually the 1994 coverage was the first one without commercial sabotage. It was 1990 that was a total butchery. However, NBC has yet to be tamed.

Ireland gain hard-earned success over France by 18-11...as usual, a very compelling match but as a rugby lover I'm starting to question where the sport is going to end up...I may be wrong, but I would hazard a guess that the 2 sides spent approx 75 minutes yesterday trying to bludgeon the opposition into submission, and the remaining 5 demonstrating the beauty of the game by clever and inventive back play...which is pretty much what I've seen in the other games, so far...looking at the stats before Saturday's game, it would appear that today's backs are bigger and carry more bulk than forwards of a generation ago...
But there again, speaking as an Irishman and having endured decades of ignominy against the French - we'll take the win!

I was thrilled to see Italy beat Scotland today, because it wasn't just luck -- they played really well. Another 10 years and they might stop being the ugly duckling of the Six Nations.
I was a bit less thrilled to see Wales beat France, but they also deserved their victory. The French were absolutely not in top form.

Another bone-crunching weekend concluded...Ireland victorious today against England but still need to work on the psychology of winning as a game that was 'in the bag' at the 50 minute mark threatened to become competitive again in the last quarter.
Huge game now in 2 weeks time between Wales and Ireland that may have the decisive bearing on the destination of this year's championship...the perennially hard-headed gentlemen of the bookmaking profession quote Ireland at 8/13, England on 5/2 and Wales at 15/2.
I suspect our Welsh friends might fancy a little of that, having Ireland at home and then a final fixture against Italy...

The 2018 six nations tournament started today. France now has a terrible team that has not won a match in something like 320 days. However, it is now full of young new members, so who knows? After trailing Ireland for most of the match, France pulled ahead and stayed ahead until the last two seconds... when it lost.
I'm kind of sorry it is so cold tonight, because I wouldn't have minded going out for a bit. The Irish rugby crowd is extremely pleasant when it comes to Paris (unlike the English rugby crowd which is usually abominable). It is a joy to see them celebrating, even at the expense of France.

I watched most of the England-Italy match today. I have nothing against England, but Italy will always have my support because it is such a hopeless cause.
The Six Nationa tournament began as a four nation event in 1883. It concerned England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. In 1910, for some strange reason France was admitted to the event. And even more oddly, Italy was permitted to join in 2000. Frankly, the only reason I can imagine for this last addition was to permit the other countries to be certain of beating another country no matter how bad they were. Italy almost never wins a single match, and of course that is the reason that I support them.
Today, Italy almost had a spark of success in the first period, but then of course it was crushed as usual, 46-15.
Two other countries have requested admission to the tournament: Georgia and Romania. I am completely in favour, because I am sure that it would allow Italy to do better.

And here we are with the 2020 Six Nations Championship which started yesterday, but this year there is a difference, at least on French television.
We now have visual parity on men's and women's championships (long overdue)*, so today I finally saw the first women's rugby match in my life, and I have to admit that I found it amazing. Rugby can be a brutal sport, and these women are tough. But one thing that is good is that all of the women are the same size. In men's rugby, there are always some huge brutes who act like bulldozers, only two or three, but it makes a difference. Anyway, England beat France 19-13.
But now, just half an hour later, the men's England-France match will take place. It's the most important one to France and is called "the Crunch." England usually wins.
* Note that I wrote "championships." Televised women's sports are only up to 18% overall but is it better anywhere else?

Since Italy has not won a match in 5 years, there is talk of replacing it with Georgia. The problem is that Georgia is not "bankable."

The Scotland-Italy match is so sad. The commentator even had to say "it's easy to understand why these two teams are at the bottom of the rankings."
