From an "airline secrets" site:
As an airline employee flying free, I was once reseated next to a dead passenger. They didn't force me to do it but asked me if I could help them by moving to that seat. It didn't really bother me, but I confess that I glanced at the blanket wrapped cadaver much more often than if he had just been asleep.

I had a few complications while in Laos. Some VIP military chap needed a plane 'at once' so I got bumped. I hung around the large tin shed which served as the terminal and airport people wandered over to chat with me. I learned that there are no flights after 4pm for an unusual reason.
There was a large project going on a few Km away as the international effort to find and remove landmines and dangerous stuff. The local planes were slow and take an hour to get to Hospital so the rear section of the plane has been set up as a hospital bed ICU. The clearers had a fire at the end of day and destroy the explosives. If anyone got hurt the plane was there, ready for action. When I finally got back to Vientiane I saw we had been carrying a young man in army clothes in the bed.
There were no tourist facilities in this town so I stayed overnight in the officers quarters, freezing cold. no hot water or breakfast. Walked to the airstrip in morning and found the wife of a teacher who had shown me over the Plain of Jars had made breakfast and the Big Boss gave me some flowers and an envelope... The Minister for aviation had invited me to lunch as he had taken my flight yesterday. We only got to the soup then I had to go and catch the plane to Cambodia.
One day, if you are good, I'll tell you about the air craft and flights in S E Asia circa 2000 ce.

I flew on Lao Aviation at the time it held the #1 rank in the world for the greatest number of crashes.
