yes. we have 11 C max during daytime now, so it's too cold for outdoors pools ... otherwise, they tend to be more kid friendly ...

Early 1960s major hospital in Sydney. It was the main centre for a large number of families that will not allow blood transfusions for religious reasons. Now they get around the problem by using other products but then it was transfuse or die stuff. So the way it worked some poor official from the Child welfare would be dragged out of bed at 3am, he then had to find a foster parent for the child who was then declared a ward of the State with the Minister of Welfare taking responsibility for the child, for 24 hours. The Minister had to be convinced that the transfusion was the only thing that could save the child before giving permission for the procedure to go ahead. OF course the parents were beside themselves with mixed emotions and their community was hardly supportive. When the child was out of danger the group sometimes turned on the parents, Minister and hospital staff to vent their anger. Could the method of vaccing kids allow children to be "in care" for the duration of the "shots" or would the people revolt completely? no, i don't think that would work. as you write above, it was transfuse or die situations. with vaccinations, they are done before someone gets sick, so they don't get sick, and while some children do get very sick, many others don't. so, as much as i am for vaccinations, i think using that method to vaccinate children would cause a lot of issues, and yes, i also think it would make people revolt completely, hide their children, or whatever.

the swimming place we like was supposed to close two years for repairs, but now they don't have money for those repairs. bad for them - but for us really good that they are open again, everywhere else is either too far away, or not really that nice for children ...

there are also lists of wrong french words in german - so, according to the internet in french you don't put a letter into a couvert (kuvert) and a baiser isn't something to eat and the friseur doesn't cut hair and the regisseur doesn't direct movies?

If we removed all of the improperly used foreign words from each language, they would shrink significantly. well, in german a handy is a mobile phone, a beamer is a projector, a box is a loudspeaker ...

i suppose it does vary a lot by family - in general, despite agnes' worries, i'd say she is so far getting on alright (and some of the worries she does have might be caused by other things and just coming out at this topic) - but we are in a generally privileged situation having lots of family nearby who supported me during home schooling times, me being able to support her emotionally and academically (i hope i do that, at least), and also me having found a relatively family friendly job again after losing the old one - but i do see quite a few kids where that is more difficult, and when it comes to school, in some cases they might not be able to catch up on the things they miss out - and like bixa mentioned, missing out on socializing is often very hard for young people, because they are at a stage of development when they turn away from family and more towards finding their own group of friends and place in life ...
of course, i agree that living through a war is a lot harder, and i am very glad that neither i nor agnes have to experience that. still feel sorry for the worries children have at the current situation, though, and also, when they miss out on various little things that seem to be not that important, and it is sometimes strange to think how many things for them are just the way things are, and that they don't know any different ...

tortellini today. one of agnes' favorites, so she'd eat the whole package if i'd let her ... yesterday we tried a takeaway we hadn't tried before - i had lamb and agnes had chicken, each grilled on a skewer (not like kebab but in larger pieces), wrapped in a pita with salad, and for me with spicy sauce ... was quite nice ...

but yeah, considering numbers are rising again here, and especially among young people and children, it seems an odd time to stop wearing masks.

for me it is a bit of a mixed thing - on the one hand, yes, i think seeing faces, expressions and all that is important for teaching and an important part of socializing for small children, and sometimes when a. keeps wearing her mask for example when we are outside cycling it makes me wonder a bit (then again, i sometimes forget to take off mine when i enter my own house, for example, or when i go outside to an area where i don't need it) ... at the same time, there is this talk about that maybe for children who can't be vaccinated yet, they should reach immunity by infection, because they are not as much at risk (also here the whole class is not quarantined anymore, only the closest contacts, which could lead to an increase in further infections), and that seems risky to me - sure, the risk of hospitalization or long covid is lower, but it still exists ... and well, some people say that basically, children had to stop going to school, stop their sports and groups and socializing, to protect older people, and now that that's done and those who want are vaccinated, there is little done to now protect them ... i don't know if that is the case or not or what is my opinion on that, but for children agnes's age, this is not just an episode in their lifes that they have to get through - it's a major part of their childhood ...

a different thing - schools here dropped the mask mandate from today. agnes says she is a bit worried about most kids not wearing masks anymore (she wanted to wear one today, but switched back to cloth mask rather than medical - but apparently some of her friends kept reminding her she could take off the mask, until the teacher said that she can also still wear it if she prefers) ... i am trying to calm her and tell her that most likely, everything will be fine, while also validating her worries and telling her that she can definitely keep wearing her mask if she wants to ... not that easy to find the right balance, though. from how she told it, it sounds like most kids were happy to take off their masks, only a few kept wearing them (kids in her class are six to eight years old, so still very small) ...

i read that while the side effects do mean that the vaccination is taking effect, it doesn't mean that without side effects it isn't. would hope so. i had no side effects other than feeling a little bit tired (and in both cases i had other reasons to be tired, so not even sure it was from the jab), and for most of my relatives it was similar ... on the other hand, a colleague was off sick for two days after her vaccination - her mother had been in hospital with covid, so that made me wonder if maybe both the strong reaction to the vaccination and the serious case of covid might have something to do with similar genetics. but i guess might be coincidence, too ...

now watched a documentary about "Wochenkrippen" (week nurseries - nurseries that existed from the 1950s to the early 1990s in the GDR, where parents brought the children early monday morning and picked them back up friday evening or saturday afternoon). my aunt (aunt by marriage) was in one from the age of six weeks to three years. and my uncle spent a few weeks in one while the rest of the family went on vacation - my grandma thought that a journey abroad is too stressful for a nine month old, and only later on realized that spending several weeks with strangers was much more stressful for him ... unfortunately can't find this one with english subtitles.

agnes is currently not that interested in harry potter, i guess the sixth one starts off kind of slow and it also becomes more obvious that it is written for older kids - but she loves the school of magical animals. there will be a movie coming out in october, too. we are in the second book, now ...
as for me, still not had time to continue in my book (well, two pages during agnes' recorder lesson last tuesday, but then, i also try ot listen what the teacher tells her, to remind her when we practice)

things are a bit different form last time i posted here, now - currently school is at normal hours including lunch (hope it stays that way) so no need to cook in the evening for agnes, though sometimes i do because i get no warm lunch at my current job (but then, you don't actually need warm food every day, anyway) ... and with my current work hours, a quick stop by the store before picking up agnes is difficult, but when i take her along for shopping she waits outside half of the time, anyway ... of course, restaurant meals outside have been possible for a long time, now, and now we could even go inside - and we do that or get take-away once or twice a week currently ... i don't think our eating and shopping habits would be too different if covid never happened - they are currently more influenced by work and school (and being too tired for cooking after work and afternoon activities) ... the one thing that could have a bigger influence would be if schools close again - we might move back to my mom's, then, and there of course we adapt to what she eats, which in general is a lot healthier than my eating habits, anyway ...

a. is at her dad's, and i had bougth a sweet potato for myself (a. doesn't like them, so i rarely make them when she is here). plan was to just bake and eat it with sour cream, but then it seemed boring to me, so i made a kind of curry with sweet potato and red lentils, and added the rice directly into the curry, too (so i only have one pot to wash), and some coconut cream and raisins, and then ate that with the sour cream ...

There is no pain worse than toothache or earache. That's why I get so upset with mothers who don't administer a painkiller to a teething baby. Yes, the gums get stuff rubbed on them but an all encompassing pain syrup will help tremendously. i would say that depends a lot on what amount of pain the baby is in and what else has been tried. i didn't ever give agnes anything beyond the numbing stuff rubbed on the gums and a cooled teething ring, and of course a lot of soothing - she was fussier than normal when teething of course, but nothing close to when she had an ear infection, when i did give her paracetamol juice ...
