Mick, redbuds are cercis canadensis. Mine, Red Force, should eventually be like this They bloom before they get leaves, which here are dark reddish. Photinias here are usually hedge plants.

I'm waiting for that sweet spot between the time the heavy dew on the grass dries and the temperature gets too hot (28° this afternoon) to mow the grass. It's really long with various weeds clumping in places and I need to trim the edges.
And my redbud is finally showing tiny leaves about to sprout. I think it was perhaps just too young to flower and since the leaves come out after the blooms, it's just beginning to leaf out. It's only mid-April after all.
We had a lot of strong wind and heavy downpours at the beginning of the week and most of the petals were knocked off my tulips.

Sun and clear sky this morning, so only 7°. It should get to about 20° later and warmer on the weekend, before temps drop again next week. Very weird.

Chèvre is a goat, also a generic goat cheese. If you are buying one you ask for a specific name.
However, chevreuil is a deer or venison. So we are back to biche and barbiche.
Epaulets??

Whatagain, it was 1864, while the civil war was still on. Obviously those old lawmakers had nothing better to do. But since Arizona was not even a state at the time, just a territory, those laws are probably not valid.

This morning I went to the post office to send a rolled-up painting in a tube to our son in Canada. The post office's policy of replacing humans with machines has a few drawbacks. It took me about half an hour, even though I know how to use a computer or smartphone. I believe the problem is that I just don't think in terms of yes/no and if a box doesn't need to be filled out in my opinion, I don't. There was no financial value but I still had to type in 1€ or the machine kept refusing to accept it. I had to get 4 customs forms. Much frustration later, it cost me 41€ to send the thing, given that the tube weighed much more than the painting, one that our son had done when he was about 16. And I still have to return to pick up my receipt -- the clerk couldn't scan the address barcode with her smartphone because the tube is round! She said she would do it later. The long lineup waiting to be helped probably influenced her.

I bought a daphne this year and it had one tiny flower on it. Heaven knows how long it will take to be big enough to cut some branches off.

It does look like a nice place for a holiday and your rental cottage is lovely.
Like Bixa, I am wondering what that green thing sticking out of the building is. Some way of loading high boats?
Obviously I didn't live in Manchester long enough -- I wouldn't put gravy on anything.

White asparagus has a thick skin on it. If you don't peel it, it gets stringy and hard to eat when you cook it.
re: breaking the ends. The ones I bought today were quite thick at the bottom (I would have preferred thinner ones) so snapping off the ends was not an option.

Asparagus season is just starting here in France too although I have never seen a peeling machine. Asparagus is one of the few crops that grow well around this area but unfortunately, they are mostly white. I prefer the green ones which you don't need to peel and taste a bit stronger.
Just bought some at the (outdoor) market this morning actually. I don't peel them, just cut the thicker stems off at the bottom.

You would need something to hold it as it grows, Tod. Wisteria can be really big and needs a support. This google maps is a street in our town and, although it's the wrong season, what you see along that wall is wisteria. wisteria on wall

Bixa, I think the non-performing redbud would die if I cut it right back. It's a young tree bought in October 2023 at a local nursery. It's a multi-trunk and one thin branch broke off with strong wind (or the kid next door's ball!). It was alive and had leaves when we bought and planted it so I don't know what it's doing. In any case, it's too late in the season to plant anything else now so we'll wait and see what it does.
I did put compost, mulch and even threw on some fertilizer. The very tips of some of the branches looked completely dry so I cut them off. We'll see. Patience is the hardest part of gardening for me.

That bed is really filling out, Except for that redbud right at the front. The two other trees we planted in October are doing well, this one just isn't doing anything. I scratched the bark a bit and it seems alive but it has no leaf buds nor blooms. And I have to finish pulling out those weeds on the right hand side. Your cedar/oak is amazing. How can two such different trees grow so closely? I assume my plane tree is partly hollow for the wisteria to have found a place inside.

It looks and sounds like a great holiday. Too bad the weather appears rather gray and drizzly much of the time, but then I guess this was in March?
I find it interesting that people whose houses back onto the canal seem to have reclaimed the land all the way to the water. Would this be private land, or does it belong to the state or whoever maintains the canals?

I was surprised how quickly worms arrrived in the part of the garden I dug out last October. From none to lots every time I go to pull weeds. Excellent news indeed.
