I can't watch videos on my computer - something has screwed up, must have repaired.
Palesa, is that how you'd say "German" in Afrikaans? In standard modern Dutch it is Duits but I've noticed quite a few spelling differences with the things you write, though I can understand them (I can't really speak Dutch - terribly hard to learn when on stays never more than 6 weeks or so in Amsterdam, as everyone speaks English, and so many the other languages I speak). But of course I can understand and read quite a bit now. Think the sentence in Dutch would be: Ik spreek niet veel Duits? (Ich spreche nicht viel Deutsch, in German)...

praat if you wish - I have NO pretension of speaking Dutch, and the above was from memory.

I was trying out my "best" German actually, lagatta. I did 6 months of German when I worked for a German funding agency.
But yes, Deutsh is German in Afrikaans.
Ek praat nie veel Deutsh nie. (Afrikaans version)

lagatta, I don't speak Dutch either- this is about all I could remember from taking some classes back in college. It's fascinating to see how a language evolves in different places.
Grecian, what a lovely video... ha.

I was probably misremembering (Bushism?) the German noun in Dutch, according to the sound shifts in Germanic languages - the reason Dutch words tend to sort of start in German and end in English....

Those 15 miles have stretched too far. They would even show Fawlty Towers on endless transatlantic British Caledonian flights. Maybe one of the reasons for that airline's disappearance.

It is incredible how the old Nazi thing pops up immediately when anything German is involved. Sigh. Ok, if you can't beat them, join them-I'll go hunt for the Mittermeier nazi clip.

Any Port is an English-language forum with many different nationalities participating. Members from different nationalities enrich this kind of forum a great deal and are very welcome here. Mocking of a country or its people will not be tolerated, and rudeness of any sort is unnecessary and unwelcome.

OK, sorry because it is supposed to be a German thread, BUT What happened to Fawlty towers links? Are the censors too quick on the draw or did someone complain?

Maybe somebody should start a special Fawlty Towers thread if its special humour is to be appreciated.

Looks like Fawlty Towers got zapped.
And just for the record: I did not complain. Not that I really miss that particular episode of Fawlty Towers- the humor is weak at best.

I am certainly not a fan of anything John Cleese has done apart from Life of Brian, so I would not encourage a thread for it!!
