I have never grasped why it is somehow 'not done' (?) to post to an older thread. Certainly, I understand if someone OP's with an obvious time limit....ie: needs an answer for a trip that they were about to take that month (a year ago)...etc. Or, if it is an abusive thread. But sometimes I discover a thread that I totally missed without time limits that I want to respond to. Or, a new member joins with great input but hesitates because it is too late? Is there a general forum protocol or have I completely misunderstood?

I posted on this topic recently and I believe it was in response to a post by Bixa but don't remember where. I was confused too but apparently it is encouraged if I recall correctly B.'s remark on this.
Found it,reply #8 in 90 days and 90 nights Free Trade Zone.

I am SO glad you raised this "issue". Really, one of the goals of this forum is to have many threads with no expiration dates.
Looking through all the boards, it's obvious that many threads can and should be revived over and over. For instance, there's a thread about planting vegetables in Putting Down Roots. Won't that be just as pertinent in Spring of 2011, say, as it is right now? And really, keeping such a discussion in one thread makes for more accessible reading.
Certainly the many fabulously festooned with photos travel threads are meant to be enjoyed ad infinitum. For instance, your recent account of your trip to Capadoccia on the Post Cards board is never going to become dated, nor would any of the accounts on that board and in the various country boards.
That's a perfect point about new members, too. A supposedly "old" thread may be just the thing that engages that person, and certainly the new member would have something to add that would freshen and revive the thread.

Different sites have different protocol. I know that on a site like Fodor's, with which I am familiar, there is often an outcry when old threads are dragged up because their archives go back many years and often the travel advice posts are completely obsolete: restaurants have closed, prices have gone up, new transportation options have become available etc. When something is dredged up from, say, 2003, people start reacting to the thread without looking at the date until someone calls their attention to it.
Of course, on a site that is only three months old, I don't think there is any such thing as an "old thread."
Nevertheless, if at some time we starting having things like a Christmas thread, I don't need to see it brought back up in July, for example.

Yes, but the people on Fodors are pompous assholes K. So full of self importance that they put Grecian to shame for being under-spoken.

Grecian on Fodor's? What was he doing there?

Aaaarrrgh, Iain! I visit Fodor's, and do not find that to be true at all. From what I've seen, people are extremely helpful and no one ever needs to be reluctant to ask for help.
It's a very big site, so it's not impossible that the occasional insufferable member slips in, but it truly cannot be characterized as in your post.

I have seen that certain Fodor's posters have joined this site, and I would love it if some of them would start posting more regularly... or at all.
Some have already become wonderful members here, but I won't denounce them.
Each site has its own style.

On another forum, I was told off for answering an older thread. There was no indication it was frowned upon, I guess it was an unwritten rule. I can see why it would not make sense for time-sensitive threads or threads containing prices or schedules that get out of date quickly, but for other topics I don't understand the big fuss. I am a mod on another site, and old threads often are brought back to the top by new members. It is often useful to have fresh input.

How delightful that people who post on Fodor's have registered here! Hello to all of you. Please plunge into the anyport pool -- travelers such as yourselves must have much of interest to share.
So true what you say, Gringalais. A good thread should be revived any time there's new information on the topic or simply because someone noticed it for the first time.

A lot of people have joined since our first fascinating threads were posted anyway.

I must confess, I am from the Fodor's site. I followed thru K2 and found all of you marvelous people. "Old" threads for new members are like opening a brown paper bag and finding treasures. I know that i have posted to several of them and hopefully it will entice you older members to revisit them.

However you got here, it's our gain, Trav63!
I may have pointed this out before, but Any Port in a Storm only started at the beginning of February 2009 -- just over four months ago. Thus, we're all newbies together.
