which side of your car the petrol cap is on when sitting inside by looking at the petrol light symbol on the dashboard, apparently.
If the symbol (which is of a petrol pump) has the nozzle to the right, that's what side your petrol cap is on, and vice versa.
It's worked with mine and a few others I mentioned it to thus far ...

One of my colleagues told me once that in cars with the little inside lever to pop the fuel door, the tank was automatically on the driver's side.
IT ISN'T TRUE!
(I have never owned a car and only use rental cars, so I don't always remember to look ahead of time.)

That's not what I was on about, although I can also verify that is also NOT true.

I know that wasn't your subject, but I know how much you enjoy it when the topic is diverted. Anyway, both of us gave useful information, I hope.

Gyro - I'll have a look tomorrow when I drive my car.
That's useful information.

The little lighted sign in my Toyota Collola shows the nozzle on the right but the tank is actually on the left.

It only works with cars manufactured after a certain date. And sometimes it's a little triangular arrow mark on one or the other side of the gas pump symbol on the gauge that you look for.
On older cars that have the lever you pull to open the filler door, I pull the lever as I turn into the gas station and listen for which side of the car makes a noise. If I don't hear it open, I look for the flap sticking out in my side view mirrors.
Never missed having the little gauge arrow.

I was pretty sure it would never be universal ...
Worth a try though.
