Nope, not a typo -- not missing a "t". Rejoice, I come bearing the recipe for flying ants! It's the time of the year the chicatanes come out. The other night they swarmed through my windows, only to shed their wings and be gone by morning. They are flying ants @25 mm long. Last night the dog started barking & I went down to investigate why the light was on over my driveway entrance. It was my neighbor & her two little boys. She said they were trying to gather chicatanes -- that they couldn't wait to make this once a year treat. I asked her how she fixed them and she said she first put them in clorox (!!!) to clean them. Then they went into a dry frying pan to be well toasted, along with a chile pajarito*. After that, she grinds them very very well in a molcajete (lava stone mortar) with just a little tepid water until they're the consistency of peanut butter. Guess you all will be out with your flashlights tonight, huh? * I don't know this chile, which apparently is only used for these ants. Must find out more.

Yuk!!!!!! How about slugs in your living room? Happened to us when we lived in Portland, Oregon. They are very vividly colored but basically they are a snail without the home. Kind of ironic, isn't it, I love escargot, one thing we will have to find when we are in Paris in September, but can't stand to see them in my living room. BTW, if anyone has a great bistro or brasserie that serves escargot, please !!!!! give me the information.

I've never tried smushed ant paste, no. I guess I would if someone offered me some, but I don't see myself out there on the street collecting ants to dip in clorox & toast. Perhaps if I knew they were organically raised in humane conditions ...........
